ppp0 start at boot

Quick and easy question I hope.
Am running Mandrake 10.1 with KDE 3.2
In system configuration GUI under Internet tab, Manage connections you can set ppp0 to start at boot - I have no network and connect to the internet with a Sagem Adsl USB modem - and beneath this tick box is a box with "metric" to the right. There is a number 20 in the box which I guess has been set up by default.

What does this number do ? What effect to change ?

Just trying to understand a bit more !
