Exclamation Possibly corrupted X-server.

Hi.

I'm new to Linux. I have installed Linux Mandrake 9.1 on a virtual harddisk of VirtualPC 2004. During installation, a few packages were not installed successfully (errors). Though, I chose to 'ignore' this as I thought it could be installed later on. When finally running Linux, I choose "linux" from the first screen that comes (5 secs choosing time). The background loads, I see some GUI elements (startbar, kde small icon) flash before my eyes repeatedly, but not kept permanent on the desktop, leaving me with a dead, darkblue blackground where the GUI login is supposed to appear on. In the wizard I had chosen KDE. I configured my screen during install, chose custom and filled in the details aida32 gave me of my monitor (ran aida32 in WinXP). I chose 1024x768, 24 bits, ran 'test' and it seemed fine, nice GUI. Though now after loading Linux I get the whole flashing GUI elements thing. I did ctrl+alt+F1, logged in, did startkde and got this:

Mandrake Linux release 9.1 (Bamboo) for i586
Kernel 2.4.21-0.13mdk on an i686 / tty1

xmodmap: unable to open display ''
xmodmap: unable to open display ''
xset: unable to open display ''''
xset: unable to open display ''''
xset: unable to open display ''''
startkde: Starting up...
ksplash: cannot connect to X server
kdeinit: Aborting. $DISPLAY is not set.
ksmerver: cannot connect to X server
startkde: Shutting down...
startkde: Running shutdown scripts...
startkde: Done.
[treval@localhost treval]$

I don't know what to do.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Treval

the easiest would be to reinstall with the correct specs for your video card.. or use generic until you can find the newer drivers.

mandy 9.1 is a dinasour (a good one i'll admit, before they went to boot).

just because the install program shows a nice screen, doesn't mean all is well.

it could have been using a generic driver which is no longer loading for whatever reason.

get the newist driver for your video card and install them, or re-install the os with a basic, generic settings to get you buy until you fix this permanetly.

good luck.
