Please, help! Newbie question: KDE-su

Hi.

I am newbie in Linux. I have Mandrake 9.1. My problem is I have installed a program that can only be executed as root and I want define a menu entry to it (using MenuDrake).

When I click on this menu entry, the program doesn't get executed because I do not have "root privileges".

So what can I do to define a menu entry with root privileges? (I don't mind a window asking for root password (KDE-su) appears)

I badly need this answer. I apologize for the incoveniences. Thank you.

Hi.

When you add a new application to your K-Menu, a file is added to a directory in your home directory. Say I added an item I called 'TV' to my K-Menu, then there should be a file called TV.desktop somewhere in my home directory.

In Fedora, these files go into $HOME/.local/share/applications - it may be different for Mandrake (I'm using KDE 3.2, so you may have to adjust these instructions).

When you find the .desktop file, right click on it in Konqueror, and go to 'Properties' -> 'Application' tab -> 'Advanced Options' -> 'Run as different user' and enter 'root' in the text field.

When you click on the item in the K-Menu, you should get the dialogue to enter the root password.

Type in "su" in the console and give root password when prompted. You're now root, so run drakconf or whatever else that you're trying to configure. If you want to permanently add root to the login menu, it's under System/Login Manager in drakconf. Just unhide root.
