Codec problem

to top it all off, I am also getting a codec error message in MPlayer, when I try to play downloaded movie files

??

To play dvds on Linux, you need to install libdvdcss. To play MS media types, you need to install win32 codecs (or w32 codecs on some distros).

I had this same problem. It's not so much a DVD codec problem, but more like the video engine is not working. What I did was actually install xine and libxine. Search in the Mandrake Control Center --> software --> install and type in libxine and xine. Install all things related to xine. The thing is that Kaffeine uses Xine to work itself so you need the xine engine. Try that and report back to us.

If you upgraded kdelibs, you may have to reconfigure the engine that kaffeine uses and it will work as usual.

Just tried the Xine install which installed win32 codecs etc etc - but get the following message in Kaffeine

No plugin found to handle this resource (/dev/hdc)

ooops - any ideas please - this is driving me nuts

can I please have more info on the following options - I am mere novice who needs talking through each process:

upgraded kdelibs, you may have to reconfigure the engine that kaffeine uses

To play dvds on Linux, you need to install libdvdcss

cheers

Kaffeine uses the Xine engine so he may have to configure Xine? I remember not even configuring or touching Xine.

This happens to me also. What you do is Open up Kaffeine, then WITHIN Kaffeine, go to ?FILE? and then OPEN DVD and point it to your DVD drive. You may have to do it twice. I know that's weird, but that's what I did to get my Kaffeine working to play DVDs

I am at work using Windows so I can't walk you through it step-by-step.

Did you also install the libcss stuff (see my sig...).

Yea I do know that Kaffeine uses xine, but in the past, I have noticed that if you upgrade kdelibs, kaffeine would not work unless you reconfigured it. Maybe this was because both KDE and xine were compiled from source.

Check to see if all your xine packages have matching release numbers. If you have inadvertantly installed or upgraded one of them that is different from the rest (it can happen) you will recieve errors such as this.

E.G. libxine1-1-0.rc5.9.1.101mdk & xine-plugins-1-0.rc5.9.1.101mdk will work together , Whereas,

libxine1-1-0.rc6a.0.1plf.i586.rpm & xine-plugins-1-0.rc5.9.1.101mdk , won't

This may not be your problem but this is what happened to me when i accidentally upgraded libxine1-1-0.rc5.9.1.101mdk to libxine1-1-0.rc6a.0.1plf.i586.rpm. Once i swapped it back everything worked fine.
Anyway, I hope you get your problem sorted out.

Cheers
