This is what I had to do, nothing on any of the cd's would help. Update the urpmi to include plf, If you do not know how search the forums look for a link made by fancypiper. Remove mplayer as you have it now along with any of the libdvd files. All you need to do after that is in the configuration menu there is the option to install software. Do a search for "mplayer" select "mplayer" and the "mplayer-gui" you should get a long list of dependencies, which will include the wincodecs and other codecs, install all of that. Mandrake will download about 10 packages and install about 12 packages. When it is done it should work.

Well, first off, I wasn't trying to be arrogant in any way. I'm sorry you took my post to heart; I was stating and trying to let you know that when you don't supply us with the needed details of your inability to get dvds to play, it's hard to help you. And to prove my point, people are still asking what version player you are using,etc....it truly does help in finding a solution.

You have so many questions being asked to you, which if you will only answer them, might fix this problem of yours.

Please don't blame others for the advice you decided to follow. YOU are the master_of_your_box and if things don't go right, it's no one's fault but yours. I know it can get frustrating getting things to work in linux (we all went and STILL go through it). If you just stay patient and do it step-by-step and if it still doesn't work, post what you have done and we'll take it from there.

Thanks sharkee, I felt that I was indeed trying to fish some more info so we all can get a better clue. I guess he/she took it the wrong way .

libdvdcss is a library that allows software to decode encrypted dvd's. if you don't have it on your system, or the software you do have is crippled, where it can't be used, then you will not be able to play a movie.
different video hardware may not work correctly with some video outputs, and there are so many different ways to do things, and versions of X, and ways to link X, and modules, and so
on forever, that we need to know the error messages you get, in detail, if any, and program versions, so we can tailor the help to your machine.
mplayer and xine are under heavy development, and new versions come out often. the authors of those programs often change the way to set them up for different reasons.

I have got mplayer working, although i have had to mix some rpm's around (redhat). The only prob now is that it is blue around my mouse and i have bluegreen colours on other windows when they are behind mplayer on my screen, anybody else had this?

i've seen it. i would just suggest a different -vo

x11 xv and dga are your best chances i think

mplayer -vo xv filename.xxx
or mplayer -vo dga -dvd 1
would be the way to try different ones

libdvdcss2

FWIW, I'm unclear on why Mandrake's downloadable 9.2 distribution does not include libdvdcss2. Were it not for the postings to these forums, I would not have figured out why 9.2's included distributions of Mplayer and Xine would not show my DVD's. All I had to do to add DVD viewing functionality to 9.2 was to download the libdvdcss2 library and install it. Is there some IP (that is, intellectual property) issue that prevents Mandrake from including this library with the downloadable ISO's? It would reduce a lot of headaches if it were a part of these images.

Yup. That's exactly it. You can find more information at the Penguin Liberation Front

If you buy it Mandrake Linux from their website then does it include all the libraries etc? It only makes sense and it seems quite fair... Anybody know?

It's not that Mandrake doesn't want to include these libraries. It's that they aren't legally allowed to carry them. Some of the libraries are covered by software patents, prohibiting the use of abtract algorithms regardless of implementation, some of them would violate the DMCA in the states, and some of them are outright illegal in some places (for example, I think the US forbids the export of "strong cryptography").

Most of these technologies are perfectly legal in *most* places, and comply with the GPL, but if Mandrake were to include them they wouldn't be able to sell their product in some markets (primarily the US). So they try to make it as easy as possible for us, linking to the Penguin Liberation Front and including instructions on how to do it.

This is NOT one you can really blame on Mandrake, if you are looking for a target for your frustration, look to silly regulatory laws and tools of market monopoly like "regional encoding" on your DVDs.

I believe it's similar to that, but the angle taken is that it *MIGHT* be deemed illegal if tried in court, and companies like mandrake and redhat are making serious money in a very professional environment (well.. redhat at least) so you can understand why they would not want to risk associating their corporate IT outlets with software which techinically does what it can with DVD encryption.

Thing is though.. you had to jump through hoops to find this information, and THAT is ithe bit that sucked. wouldn't you rather have NOTHING relevanet on the CD's so you would find your own from elsewhere? Recently MPlayer devleopers have formally asked Suse, Debian etc... to totally remove their software from the distributions as they would rather be not used at all than used in a light which leaves people thinking that their software is crap because it can not play DVD's.

If the software was not there at all then surely any newbie would get to play DVD's a whole heap quicker. everyone agree?

Jumping through hoops... hmmm, but isn't that what's fun about working with Linux???

(I just realized I posted in the wrong group as I'm not running Mandrake anymore but Slackware 9.1. However, any non RPM-based thoughts would be appreciated. I'll move this post if it offends anyone for being in the wrong place).

Anyway, I too am having trouble playing DVD's on my laptop. Now, it could be that I'm running a dinosaur (TP 600 128MB Ram), but I'm hoping I can get this to work. I'm trying to use MPlayer, and I've successfully compiled libdvdcss, libdvdnav, as well as the MAD libraries into the app. Libdvdread won't compile into the app though because of something called libdvdkit or some such thing automatically disabling libdvdread. So what ends up happening (and I don't know if this is the reason) is that I keep getting video errors no matter which -vo option I try. The only one that seems to work is -vo gl, but the best that does is to flash the beginning of the dvd track (like a fraction of a second) and then it quits. Also, the command line keeps saying there is no audio, regardless of which DVD I'm trying to play. At the moment I have only one DVD that works, and the rest all do the same thing. Funnily enough, I can't play DVDs in WinXP either, but in Win98 I have no problems (yes, I have a triple boot system, please don't hang me yet...). Anyway, any thoughts my way would be appreciated (I promise not to accuse anyone of being arrogant).

don't use libdvdread.. libdvdkit is an mplayer hack of dvdread which works and integrates much better.

please post REAL errors, not vague guesses or such.

If you set up your sources and use the software manager you can get Mplayer to work in a matter of minutes. I have a How-to On my site for 9.2.

I realized you are running Slack. Have you been to LinuxPackages.net ?? There are a ton of great packages there. I found everything needed to get Mplayer workin from there. If you have a Slackware Box its the place to get your Packages. Check it out. It completely dedicated to Slackware users.
