What packages do I need exactly to watch DVD movies in mdk 9.2, because I haven't had luck with Xine or Totem, any help?

try mplayer with libdvdread

that doesnt work for some odd reason

- libdvdread
- libdvdplay0
- libdvdnav1
- libdvdread-utils

all i get is a frikkin black screen

try one of the other video outputs

Which version of Mplayer do you have?

I have had my best luck with Xine, but it wouldn't do anything until I got libdvdcss (If that is how it is spelled), then it worked like a champ. Totem works fine.

Mplayer sucked until I downloaded the 1.x version. The version that came with the distro would play one chapter, then stop. If I went into the skin browser, weird things happened and the thing just locked up. I was fine if I went with the default skin.

Which player are you using and what version? If xine (can't help you with totem), try removing all related packages first, then upgrade libxine1 and xine-ui before installing plugins, etc. I had a problem with xine crashing at startup (with 9.2) when I tried to install the latest versions of xine-ui, plugins (especially the plf ones) with the default libxine1. But removing them, upgrading libxine1 (urpmi libxine1) first, installing the mdk.rpms (xine-ui and dependencies) second, opening up xine, configure, then installing the libs+plf plugins last worked like a charm.

Other options for dvd play are kmplayer and ogle. Although you would still need libdvdcss2 to play encrypted dvds (as most are now-a-days).

im actually getting quite fed up towards linux, it is not illegal to play DVD's on computers in England so why does everything have to be crippled? I remember with MDK 9.0 I could just put in the DVD and Xine would start playing the DVD. Can they not customize installation that with your locale it understands the rules etc? or am i just going crazy? I decided to crossover once and for good and it's just looking bad.

If anybody knows exactly how and which packages exactly that will work first time to get DVD's to play then please reply. Btw, have they crippled xmms too?

I guess since you havent replied with definate "yes, I have 'this-and-this' and tried 'this-and-this'", how is anyone supposed to help you?

I gave you a start on how to get xine working plus the libs you need to get dvds to play. Perhaps you have fubared it beyond repair. How do we know?

All you want is to get your dvds to play, BUT, when you just want the solution without giving any specific details, nor feedback, it's a lost cause for both you and us.

If you going to give up that easily, just take a break from linux for a while and get back to it when you feel the need to apply yourself again.

that is so arrogant man, i have followed every bit of advice. i have read other people's howto's with mdk 9.2! all they say is i need libdvdcss2, and then others have mentioned other libs i need. if xine has become screwed up it is because i followed everyones advice, and infact i have reinstalled mdk 9.2 about 8 times, each time trying every new way of getting xine to work.

now what?

How did you install it.
when using mplayer do you get errors start mplayer from terminal and note information printed. post any errors & we will try to help

One more thought on this... have you tried this with more then one DVD? As unlinkely as it sounds... it could be a damaged DVD, or maybe just a fluke.

Did you install from RPM? Which one? The one on CD? Did you install from source? Can you play other media files with Mplayer/Xine?

estatik's observation was valid. We don't know what the results of the advice was. Let us know.
