Hi all.
When I got my hands on mandrake 10 I heard that it was relatively painless to set up an adsl connections. Great, I thought. I had tried on mandrake 9.2 but to no avail.
I use pipex as my internet providers and have tried to set up a new connection.
I go to (start) > System > Configuration > configure your computer.
then I choose network and internet, then New Connection.
I choose the connection I want to configure (adsl), then choose the network interface to configure: alcatel.
I am prompted to give (either through floppy or Windows installation) the microcode files.
I try windows, no luck. I choose floppy which has the .sys file needed. (the mgmt.o file I have already placed in /usr/share/src and /root, I have read two guides which tell me different locations to put it in).
I get an error complaining about something or other (I apologize I cannot remember or check the exact error now, i'll update this tommorow writing the exact error it gives me).
Theres still a next button on the error window, so I press that.
I am prompted with a location to select (I choose United Kingdom) and then select my isp. I don't see Pipex there.... I try using british telecom (probably a stupid thing but I thought it was worth a try), then enter into a form my isp, dns server 1 & 2 (I did not put a value, i'm not too sure of them), my login name and my password.
I get the choice of starting up the conneciton on boot. I choose yes, then continue to restart my pc.
After the restart......
I basically get a message box telling me it couldn't connect. I now get this every time I turn my pc on.
So what i'm getting at is:
a. How to undo what i've just done so I do not receive the error about connecting once kde loads and (hopefully) giving me the chance to try again.
b. If anyone here uses pipex with mandrake 10, or anyone who knows what I need to do to connect to the internet, then please, help me.
Until I get this working I have to connect through a windows pc - not very nice.
Okay just to keep you updated:
I fixed the problem with the floppy and mgmt.o. Apparently I put it in the wrong place.
It doesn't ask me for the microcode anymore.
Now I click on United Kingdom (in the 'where are you connecting from') and choose BT. I found out I should choose that one because even though I connect through pipex I still have a bt phone line.
Anyways I choose pppoa, enter all my details (provider, dns servers, user, password) then choose to try and connect to the internet right now.
The first time I tried it the right light on the alcatel thing went amber, then back to green.
A few seconds later I got a message saying I could not be connected to the internet, try changing your configuration. Basically it didn't work.
Please, does anyone know a way I could connect to the internet?
Yeah I got it to connect. The internet works fine. Only problem is that my pc keeps completely freezing at random times, forcing me to restart it.
I tried with the 2.4 kernel but my mouse doesn't want to work when I go on it. Its not that the pc has frozen, I can navigatie with the keyboard... but the mouse just won't move.
I'm currently fiddling about editing core/usb.c and recompiling the kernel so see if that helps.
If you system is freezing, then that's hardly an acceptable situation. Have you considered if it is a hardware fault, or is definately the kernel at fault?
No, I didn't need to recompile the kernel or anything like that, and its definitely not a hardware fault as I normally connect through that PC, running windows, to get onto the net.
Just put mgmt.o in /usr/share/speedtouch (or /usr/speedtouch, can't check at the mo), and then it just finds everything automatically. You select you ISP, then choose to boot up on start up. I selected yes, restarted the pc and just tried a quick ping to find that it worked.
A few minutes later the freezing began....
I've pretty much given up on it now. I just can't seem to find a way to make it work (or the mouse work in the case of the 2.4 kernel). I'm still trying every now and again though.
I feel sorry for you. I struggled with the speedtough for a year or so, but it made trying out different distros a real pain, as I had to go through all the wretched speedtouch configuration nightmare again and again.
The easy solution is to buy a DSL modem that connects to your ethernet port. I got a zoom x5 external modem /firewall /router /switch for about £65. Best thing I ever bought. It is a breeze to set up, and allows internet connection sharing and is a switch for my little network. If you leave it turned on and plugged in when you install a new distro, everything is "just taken care of". Magic!
