I find it easier to just install the php package right from mandrake. They do all the config for you. Just make sure you get the mod_php for apache or whatever it is called, and it'll say you need php and a couple other packages. Also, get the php-sql package, you should be able to communicate with mySQL from php.
Hope that helps

Then add web sources from here: http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/#third
And then goto mandrake control center->programs->media and uncheck your CD-sources.

Have you checked to make sure mod_php was installed? When you go to a page that doesn't exist, if you look towards the bottom, it has 'Apache Server...blah blah...mod PHP' or something like that if PHP is indeed installed.

when i goto http://loclahost/ i see this message at the top of the screen
Welcome to localhost
This site is powered by: Apache-AdvancedExtranetServer/2.0.48 (Mandrake Linux/6.8.100mdk) mod_perl/1.99_11 Perl/v5.8.3 mod_ssl/2.0.48 OpenSSL/0.9.7c PHP/4.3.4!
Note: If you are seeing this instead of the webpage you expected, it's most likely because the server is not yet fully configured, or is under an upgrade. Come again tomorrow and your usual content should be back.

php
first you need to make a test.php file and then type LOCALHOST/test.php to see if PHP is even running.
if it is not follow the instructions on PHP's webpage you cant go wrong with them.

put
Code:
<?php phpinfo(); ?>
in a test.php file and open it on your server. It should work because I see PHP 4.3.4 installed on the server.
