Partioning help required

hi,

im about to reinstall mdk 9.2 (having changed the hardware in my system, mdk has gone tits up and its just going to be easyer to reinstall than sort it)

i need some help in setting up the partions on my system.

I have the following space available for linux to use :

160gb on 160gb maxtor sata drive (main)
120 gb on 120gb western digi ide drive
80gb on 120gb ibm ide drive

the plan is :

use the full 120gb on the western digi drive for video, use the 80gb on the ibm for audio and other media, and use the 160gb drive for everything else.

so.....

mount the western digi as /video, mount the ibm as /media (setting permissions to allow read-write for users)

the problem is what to do with the maxtor drive, atm its partioned as (set automaticly by mdk when i first installed it) :

/ 5.6gb
swap 489mb
/home everything else

is this okay? or should i set partions for /var, usr etc? i want to set a small partion (about 20gb) for archiving programs/install scripts/configs etc

any advice would be appreciated.

Having /home as a separate partition is helpful when you upgrade Linux so a separate /home is a good idea.

Setting up separate /usr, /var, and so forth on the same hard drive buys you nothing. You can get a performance improvement by spreading Linux across all three hard drives. You could place /home and /usr on the other two hard drives.

When you have more than one partition on a hard drive you get the best performance by placing the most heavily used partition in the middle of the drive and the lesser used partitions on the ends.
