I had a similar undefined symbol problem (g_return_if_fail_warning) in atk-1.2.4
which only showed up when building gtk-2.3.6.

My quick hack was to explicitly include <glib/gmessages.h> in the atk.h and a couple of other
atk include files and then recompile. This removes the undefined symbols from the resulting
atk shared library.

In theory gmessages.h should be pulled in by the chain of includes during compilation, in
my case this being..
glib-object.h -> gobject/gtype.h -> glib.h -> glib/gmessages.h

Yet to investigate why my current environment (cross compile for arm) has failed to include
the gmessages.h file.

Hope this helps,
Jim.

Mandrake 10-1 gtk+2.0 and pango 1.8.1

Same problems here!

Need gtk+-2.0 or higher for GProFtpd. Managed to install glib and atk.
Now struggling with pango. No luck so far. Please, help!

Code:
./.libs/libpangoxft-1.0.so: undefined reference to `g_assert_warning'
/home/pavel/FTP/pango-1.8.0/pango/.libs/libpango-1.0.so: undefined reference to `g_fopen'
./.libs/libpangox-1.0.so: undefined reference to `g_return_if_fail_warning'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[4]: *** [pango-querymodules] Error 1
make[4]: Leaving directory `/home/pavel/FTP/pango-1.8.0/pango'
make[3]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1

I got pango to compile by changing the order by which libraries are located for linking in the shell script, libtool:

2286c2286
< newlib_search_path=`$echo "X$deplib" | $Xsed -e 's/^-L//'`" $newlib_search_path"
---
> newlib_search_path="$newlib_search_path "`$echo "X$deplib" | $Xsed -e 's/^-L//'`
