Ok, next item.

The IRQ problem usually is a result of IRQ routing not being able to be handled by the kernel.

Are you using any startup kernel parameters such as noapic, noapci, noapm, etc.?

Maybe this may sound like a silly question at the moment but,...... are you're batterys charged up?
Or are you using a wired mouse?

Maybe the fact that it's from Microsoft upsets Linux!

Microsoft mice are fully supported and work fine.

The exception to this are some of the newer wireless units, but so far results are good.

No it's back to the USB issues.

Something is interfering with the USB bus.

I'd try making sure that things like UHCI support is not loaded at boot time, to see how that impacts the mouse.

I'm running BOTH PS/2 and USB mice on several laptops under Mandrake w/o freezing issues.

But then why, does this exact same hardware setup work with suse? If it is a hardware issue, or a bios configuration issue, it should suffer the same problem. I don't think it's a problem with mandrake supporting the mouse, i think it's a problem of mandrake supporting my usb controller on the motherboard.

Re: Bios & Configuration

One would think so.

Re: Controller

There are really only three areas of major difference.

a) The kernels used in both releases
b) The "X" implementation
c) Other loaded modules

While the kernel provides the underlying USB support via the loaded modules, Mandrake may be loading a different set than what SUSE uses upon startup.

e.g. the UHCI, OHCI, etc. modules are loaded by Mandrake. I can't speak for Suse since I don't use it.

You've already ruled out kernel parameters or other conflicts, and that it works with SUSE does indeed tend to rule out the hardware.

So, does SUSE use X.org? And if so what version.

Also what USB related modules are loaded by SUSE?

Actually no, Suse still uses Xfree86 and not x.org. Could be a problem with the X.org. No clue where to go from here

I am also having this problem. I searched the forums for "freezing mouse" and the other threads haven't been helpful.

I've got a Logitech MX500 mouse and Mandrake 10.1 fresh install, DFI LP 250GB. Both mouse and keyboard are USB, no other USB devices plugged in.

After some time the mouse locks up but I can still use the keyboard to navigate. It used to work a few months ago without a problem until I reinstalled 10.1 (I was experimenting and messed up).

Someone mentioned that the OS is probing the USB for devices, my USB Speedtouch ADSL modem is unplugged; could it be the source of the problem?
(I hate Alcatel/Thomson/Speedtouch but couldn't afford anything else)
