Optical mouse keeps freezing up, why?
 

Hi,

I am trying my hand at Linux and I installed Mandrake 10.1 on my machine. Unfortunately my Microsoft USB Optical mouse freezes up after a random amount of time. The keyboard still works however the mouse wont respond.

I am using KDE.

The mouse does not have issues under Windows.

Any hints?

ls -al /dev/mouse should show: mouse -> psaux
If it doesn't, cd to /dev and as root:
rm -f mouse
ln -s psaux mouse

And in /etc/X11/XF86Config:

Just curious if this problem was resolved. I have a brand new A7V8X-X mobo that is doing this exact problem with mandrake 10.1. Just out of curiosity, i installed Suse Personal 9.1 and it worked great. I'm going to take a look at the suggestion to try and see if this works, but i've heard rumblings that this is a problem with mandrake and the VIA chipset on my mobo. Anyone care to comment? thx

mhearne's solution WOULD work great if the mouse was a PS/2 type one.

In the poster's case it's a USB one.

The "freezing" is probably caused by probes for USB devices.

You may need to alias off USB modules (such as the uhci, etc.) which may be interfering with the mouse.

Also kernel parameters may play a part as well...

Checked the config, and my settings matched the configuration you supplied. i have tried switching from APIC to PIC in the bios to no luck. Unfortunately, i have a usb keyboard as well, so when it locks up, it takes the keyboard out as well. All the devices work perfectly well under Win2k and on my mac, so i know the devices are good. When the keyboard and mouse lock up, the system is still functioning (screensaver kicks in, windows still pop open...) and i can ssh into it and go to init 6 to restart.

This is really bumming me out, as i've been a long fan of Mandrake (user since mandrake 6.0) If anyone has a suggestion, i'd love some assistance.

Eh, if you have a USB mouse then the above will not work for you.

Try running mouseconfig and setting up the mouse again but specifying the correct interface.

After i tweaked it i reran mousconfig, I checked my syslog and found the following error right after the mouse and keyboard locked up:

Also, when i run mouseconfig from a terminal window instead of running it thru mandrake control center, i get the following errors:

I get no error when i run from MCC

Do you have any other devices plugged into the USB ports?

Mousconfig does alter my XF86Config file, it changes the settings to:

Yes, i do have one device, A Belkin KVM switch, which is how my keyboard and mouse are routed to the computer. I don't think it's the cause, because this system was doing it before i even bought the kvm switch, and on a completely fresh install of M10.1

Humor me.

Remove the Belkin, and start your system from a COLD start.

Then check the logs and it's performance again.

I just got it to lock up with the mouse directly in the usb port, a ps/2 keyboard and no kvm. I'm rebooting to check the logs and see what they say.

Ok, rebooted and have the logfile, but it looks the same as before. Just remember that this same setup worked flawlessly when i tried suse personal 9.1 earlier this week. The only thing i've done to this system to try to make this work, is install the nvidia driver for my video card.

Usually the error you are getting about ep0in is the result of a conflict with another EXTERNAL USB device.

As you have removed the external devices, but still get the same thing it's something else.

What is troubling is the error you are getting about IRQ5 want 3

How is the PNPOS setting of your bios set?

Have you allocated any resources manually via the bios?

My bios is set to PNP OS Disabled
No resources manually allocated in bios
