Obtaining Mandriva 2007 Spring Free CDs
 

I know this is an ongoing issue, but I'd like to check with all of you that I haven't missed an option:

Basically I would like to upgrade several PCs here to Mandriva Spring Free Edition. They currently dualboot Mandriva 2007 from CD installs, and I would like to install in this manner again, but can only find DVD ISO images.
(Begin the lame geek household tale... ;) )

We currently have slow broadband ADSL, 256kbps, looking to get this upgraded to 8Mbps but that won't happen for weeks at least.

We don't have a home network, although again a router & wifi are hoped for in the nearish future, finally.
An internet install for each PC is out. It is an unlimited connection so pulling the files down for each PC shouldn't be an issue, but just too slow and inefficient.

None of the PCs have a DVD burner, and not all the PCs have DVD readers anyway. The DVD ISO itself is useless to me.

My usb flash drive is 1Gig, not enough to move the DVD ISO/repository files in one go, even if I could download them anytime soon.

Is my best bet to start downloading the DVD ISO/repositories and moving them 1Gig chunk by 1Gig chunk to each PC to do a harddrive install/upgrade? Are the CD images available somewhere or even expected soon?
Google results show the mandriva club site has forum threads and an xwiki page about this situation.

I think for now I'll doublecheck DVD burner prices/local spares, and start the wget/bittorrent of the DVD ISO... ;)

Just as soon as I post this, Mandriva/awilliamson updates that official SpringCDs page to say:On the club forum he's found to say: and Looks like 6Mbps ADSL and wifi will be here before then, and in the mean time there's a Free mini CD image as well as the One images, slow as the torrents are.

Go to the Mandriva ftp mirror of your choice. Navigate to the official/iso/2007.1 directory. There you will find the following images:HTH,

That's the One LiveCD/Install disc, I'm looking to run the full Free version. I don't fancy paying for the PowerPack this release, as since I last did they've put out a few buggy versions and now not even the CD images.

Do you know how much in terms of data/packages is different between a One install, the newish Free single/mini CD and the full Free DVD install?

As far as free goes, that's all there is this time around, cd-roms, for 64bit or 32bit, and a choice of kde or gnome.

Any other packages may be downloaded with smart or urpmi.

Another way to get the cd or dvd is to look out for a Linux Magazine with the cover disk.

If you have a fast Internet connection, go ahead and download the Mandriva One image of your choice, burn it to CD, install Mandriva, then set up the Internet Media Sources from the ftp repository of your choice by following the direction at Easy URPMI and finally install any additional packages you want or need.

And yes I was referring to the One disk, There is still a lot on it.

Prior to the spring release a mag "Linux User and developer" had a dvd of mandy 2007.0 with 64 & 32 bit and a small choice desktop managers. IceWm, Gnome, kde, etc.

You may be able to back order an issue, check out the web site. Ditto for Linux-Magazine.com they also distribute dvd's with every issue(that I have seen, last 4 or 5)

During 2000, 2003 I participated in a linux postal service, where people with inadequate connections could get a copy of the distro by paying for postage and handling fees.

There must be something like that near you? :(

I've gained an old machine with a dead WindowsME install (16colours GUI, not 16bit, no working mouse, could barely get it back to shut down before it BSODed again).
After meeting my 4 Mandriva2007 CDs it's all working fine, and has a DVD ROM and CDRW like my machine. So the family PC can have those drives, and maybe I can find a mag with the Spring Free DVD.
Decent broadband may be coming soonish too, might be able to take advantage of the Free or £5/month bundles with Sky or Orange. Just checking up on the over-subscribing and local loop unbundling horror stories.

I have previously purchased the PowerPacks, used friends CDRWs and uni CS dept. to download & burn CDs, and even ordered them via post from people who burn them for near media+postage costs. I think I'll be trying the full Free release before considering paying £50 for the PowerPack, and I'll try find a new cd service.

There are plenty of people selling the cds like for example http://www.cheaplinux.co.uk/ or ebay
but unclear if this is 2007.0 or 2007.1

As for copying the repositories gig by gig, you may do it and set up either smart or urpmi to see it as an update site.

You'll need the hdlist, md5sum, and others to get it all going.

In fact you can make your own md5sum and hdlist with

genhdlist --list --md5sum, play around with it to get the directories right, try genhdlist --help.

If this in response to my post, just to be more precise the website does not really say if it is 2007 or 2007.1 that gets delivered. I assumed the later, but worth checking

I just meant the download. I did check out that shop-site, 10 pounds, eh?

Imagine the cost if I posted the dvd from here, the east side of Australia to the UK? lol

But then I thought I would see if the 64bit dvd was available and there it was.

Not long ago I got the 64bit version of One iso cd-rom from there and got the

other programs via urpmi and smart (I like gui's).

The Free 64bit dvd was not there then to choose, only the powerpacks.

Anyway, hope this helps someone. :)

FYI: Issue 79, June 2007 of Linux Magazine has the Spring Free DVD. Which I now have too, just need to get a moment to install drives and it. ;)

Mandriva just issued an email:Hopefully that means 50% off Spring as well as the older 2007 release.

An working Idea for your situation
 

REPOSITORY SERVER PART
1) First of all download that Spring Free DVD ISO.
2) Now extract the files from that ISO using ISOBUSTER in wine. or else mount the ISO to any folder.
3) Now you can see all the files in that mounted folder
4) create a softlink to your apache's public directory
5) Now all set for a http installation server
6) Now write the boot.iso file which will be available in the
/ISO-mounted-folder/2007S-Free-i586-DVD/i586/install/images/boot.iso

CLIENT INSTALLATION PART
1) Boot with that CD
2) select http installation
3) give the hostname name in which the apache is running
4) THATS IT :)

It may seem to be big process but it simple & working for me.....

Not had too much fun with Updating my 2007 install via booting the Spring DVD, think it had a few problems with existing config files, also Spring itself has a few bugs. Annoying rpmdrake more detail empty list (when just installing one package apparently).

Signed mum up to a £30/month mobile deal with Orange, £100 credit back, £5/month 8MB 'unlimited' ADSL with Livebox(wifi router), paid £19.99 for the Nokia e65 to go with my 6300 from O2. ;)

Still in two minds about swapping out my working Athlon64 3000+ for this 3800 X2... Ah, a salary is a wonderful thing! :cool:
