NVIDIA ERROR "rivafb"

Hey guys I am getting this error message when trying to install my NVIDIA drivers why am I getting it and what do I have to do to make it install?

Here is the warning message:

Your Kernel was configured to include "rivafb" support as a loadable kernel module.

The rivafb driver conflicts with NVIDIA driver; the NVIDIA driver will still be built and installed but be aware that the NVIDIA driver will not be able to function properly if the "rivafb" module is loaded.

In short it fails to install. Help please....

which version of the drivers are you trying to install? if you're using the newest 6111 drivers, try the last release 6106. they can be found here........

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_archive.html

ignore the RIVAFB warning & proceed with the install.

there seems to be a problem for some Mandrake users from what i read with the new 6111 drivers (including myself) where they fail to install. i haven't had time to research it yet, but the 6036 drivers should work fine. the improvements with the 6111 drivers is negligable (from what i read) so you won't be missing anything. if/when i find a solution to the 6111 drivers, i'll post it.

Thanks I have installed Nvidia before, I am going to download the Mandrake 10.0 Official version and retry the install. I believe my kernel version is the 2.6.3-15mdk version and I did install the proper kernel-source.

I will report back.....

I still have that problem with ALL drivers from nvidia, i cannot get them to work on a K8T800 AMD 64 board (3400 athlon) and a geforce fx 5200.

Any and all help would be appreciated. It warns of RIVAFB and fails because of it, but it does not show up as a module anywhere (including when i lsmod)

I'll be happy to post some outputs tonight.

That's probably because it's built into the kernel, not a as a module.

If you feel that's your problem, you'll need to recompile the kernel and uncheck that option (Device Drivers->Graphics Support).

I installed the original version of Mandrake 10.0 Official with the built-in NVIDIA drivers and it installed the Nividia driver on its own. Anyway I think I did, because the NVIDIA splash screen comes up when it reboots.

I have also Installed NVIDIA driver manually as well.

Otish:

I have finally resolved the RIVAFB error message I was getting with my Mandrake 10.0 Offical PP operating system. Here is what was happening. I was getting the RIVAFB warning message when I was trying to install the wrong NVIDIA driver.

I had to install the following NVIDIA driver and module below from the Mandrake Commercial Package location: www.mandrakeclub.com

1- Go to Mandrake Commercial packages (under downloads.)
2- Click on RPM indexed by name.
3- Click on 208 -package begining with "n"
4- Download NVIDIA_GLX-5336-6mdk (the driver for 3D acceleration)
5- Download NVIDIA-kernel-2.6.3.15mdk-5336-6mdk (this is the module that loads "glx" # 3D layer)

Here is where it got tricky because I tried installing a few different ways and it did not work after 3 different attempts or failures.

I updated my kernel from a "kernel-2.6.3.-7mdk" to a kernel-2.6.3-15-1-1mdk, I also updated my kernel-source to a matching one. [kernel-source-2.6.3.-15mdk]

After doing the above, I went to the MCC RPM software remove tool and I searched under "kernel" and found the old NVIDIA-kernel-2.6.3-7mdk and I uninstalled it.

I then had to install my RPM package "NVIDIA-kernel-2.6.3.15mdk-5336-6mdk" first (step-5 above) I tired to install step 4 above first and it would not work (got a dependency error) after installing the "NVIDIA-kernel-2.6.3.15mdk-5336-6mdk" I went back installed "Download NVIDIA_GLX-5336-6mdk". After all of that I rebooted and my NVIDIA SPLASH SCREEN appeared.

I ran glxgears in Konsole:

Code:
4617 frames in 5.0 seconds = 923.400 FPS
5590 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1118.000 FPS
5935 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1187.000 FPS
6026 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1205.200 FPS
5837 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1167.400 FPS
5954 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1190.800 FPS
5828 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1165.600 FPS
5759 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1151.800 FPS
5925 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1185.000 FPS
5687 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1137.400 FPS
Anway I never would have gotten this far if not for a good friend who's an expert at Linux.

I am posting it here in the event someone else has this same sort of problem and that it might be able to save him a lot of time trouble shooting it.

I have installed the NVIDIA driver with Mandrake 10.0 Community manually, but never before with the Mandrake 10.0 Official Operating system.

Try running the installer with the --add-this-kernel option. Like NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run --add-this-kernel It worked for me that way
