Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

Okay - Tell me is there any sort of text editor in the command center where you can load and edit files? Haven't used Mandrake for quite a while and the annoying bit is that most of this needs to be done out of the desktop....
And tell me have you ever started a text editor other than the suggested ones when you were
root@localhost or a user in the black space looking like DOS?

I have Kwrite, which looks and acts like Windows works or word.
Other than that, I have never installed anything with Mandrake. I've tried before with Thiz-Linux.

With Thiz-Linux, a person would extract the file, which is like unzipping the file and then you would run the commands inside the xterminal. Even with that being said. not everything wold load/install correctly.
I almost gave up on Linux, then someone turned me onto Mandrake.
