Where does it give you the option to install a kernel from the install??

Regards

Pete

Here's what I do as root:
urpmi kernel-2.6.3.9mdk
urpmi kernel-source-2.6.3-9mdk
init 3
log in again :william
passwd
su
passwd
cd /home/william/Downloads (where I put the NVIDIA driver (latest is 5336(-maybe needed for 2.6 kernel))
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run
choose options - I always choose "compile a new nvidia whatever"
-watch it do its thing-
vi /etc/X11/ XF86Config-4
i
-change nv to "nvidia"
esc
:wq
exit
startx

This always works, but from 9.1 experience I learned to select log-in during install; auto-login on boot caused problems with this nvidia install.

Afterthought: you can find what kernels are installed by typing
rpm -qa | grep kernel.uname -r tells what kernel it is using right now.

I urpmi kernel and kernel-source, then I urpme the original kernel.

You're getting closer but I don't see the load of the glx module which you're supposed to have and it's loading some stuff I've never seen before.

The directions I followed (which worked really well btw) said

change the part that says
Driver "nv"
into
Driver "nvidia"
Also, you have to add
Load "glx"
in the same Section that contains:
Load "dbe"
Additionally, if that section contains:
Load "dri"
or
Load "GLcore"
you have to remove them.

If you want to see these directions here's the link.

Also, here's my /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 if it helps:

# File generated by XFdrake.

# **********************************************************************
# Refer to the XF86Config man page for details about the format of
# this file.
# **********************************************************************

Section "Files"
# Multiple FontPath entries are allowed (they are concatenated together)
# By default, Mandrake 6.0 and later now use a font server independent of
# the X server to render fonts.
FontPath "unix/:-1"
EndSection

ok...thanks doug, I will add the glx when I get home (just started work).

Though from memory, I had this line in previously & it did the same thing.

I will post the log after I have tried it if it does not work.

Regards

Pete.

Hello again,
At least you are getting a better result now.
Try this:
Open /etc/modules.conf and see if this line is there.:-

alias /dev/nvidia* nvidia

If not, add it, then re-edit the XF86Config file and see if it works.

You could also try this:-

From console mode, issue modprobe nvidia, and see if successfull, when you then issue the startx command, you should get the nvidia splash screenp
Just a side note...
I added this to my /etc/modules.conf and made restart but still it screams that it cant load nvidia module. So I did look to /dev/ and I were not able to find nvidia module what you say should be there. Tho modprobe nvidia still works. Weird huh
Any ideas how I could make kernel to load that nvidia module while system is booting up..wherever it resides.
Thx
