Unhappy Nvidia drivers (almost given up)

HI

Ok, I have read the previous posts on this subject & I have tried everything! (I think)

I have been at this for hours!!

This is what I do:

install mdk 10 (yet again)
dl ia32 driver from nvidia (I have this now on a cd to save me time)....dial up
install the 2.6.x.x kernel from install cd
exit kde
login as root
install driver
back into kde
edit XF86Config-4 (Driver "nvidia", Load "glx" etc)

then when I reboot and startx I get nothing but gobbledegook on the screen & have to hit the reset button!!

I then have to reinstall mdk to get to kde again!

Please help anyone or my pc is going to get thrown out the window!!.....lol

Regards

Pete

ps....total noob but willing to learn

Hello,
A couple of things,
When you install the driver, does it tell you that it has installed OK?
Check your /etc/x11/XF86Config-4 file against this, which is a working Nvidia XFConfig file.

HI,

Yes it says that the install was ok.

I am about to install the driver again....should this change the config in any way itself??

I will be able to get into kde after the install,....but I am scared that after a reboot, x will not load again!!

Ok, I gave myself a quick lesson in vi in the console and managed to edit the config fileso I could get back into x.

Here is the config:

When I change the driver to nvidia it comes back with a message that it failed to load the nvidia module (not sure where to find the log for this)

Hello again,
At least you are getting a better result now.
Try this:
Open /etc/modules.conf and see if this line is there.:-

alias /dev/nvidia* nvidia

If not, add it, then re-edit the XF86Config file and see if it works.

You could also try this:-

From console mode, issue modprobe nvidia, and see if successfull, when you then issue the startx command, you should get the nvidia splash screen

Hello lasdausp!
Is there something about AGP-bus in your computer's BIOS, something like 2x, 4x, 8x or AUTO? If there is, try put the AGP-value in 4x or 2x.
In the XF86Config-4 file try Option "NvAGP" "3" or "2".

In your config file weren't you supposed to change

driver 'nv' to

driver 'nvidia' ?

Ok, I tried adding the stuff that you said, but no good...also modprobe nvidia comes up negative. I think this is the correct log file:

It makes perfect sense, the thing is it says you're trying to load nv, which is the old 2d module, and not nvidia, which is the new module.

The part I'm refering to is this:

(II) LoadModule: "nv"

and the other NV: stuff, that's the old module, not the new one from nvidia

Here is some output from my /var/log/XFree86.0.log:

(II) Loading extension GLX
(II) LoadModule: "nvidia"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.o
(II) Module nvidia: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
compiled for 4.0.2, module version = 1.0.5336
Module class: XFree86 Video Driver

Here's part of my XF86Config-4:

Section "Device"
Identifier "device1"
VendorName "nVidia Corporation"
BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce3 (generic)"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "DPMS"
EndSection

See that Driver line ? I think that's what you need to change.

The modprobe nvidia works ok on my system even with the module already loaded. If it doesnt work on your system it may mean the wrong module is already loaded or you didn't really install the driver from nvidia correctly.

I think I stuffed up with that log file....( it was the file that was generated after sucessfully starting x)

maybe I should try re installing mdk and then install the 2.4.x kernel!

ps my username is different cos I'm at work.

Not sure if this will help you at this point...you may have figured it out but...

When I loaded mdk10.0 I went in and did a software install from configuration and loaded the kernal 2.6 source...the source part is the big deal...I didn't see you say that specifically so I don't know if that is what you are referring to when you say you loaded the kernal from cd1. Anyway, after I loaded the kernal source file that way then logged in under root without going to kdegui, located the nvidia driver and sh nvidia..... that's what I did with same file, and kernal you appear to be talking about. Things went fine from there...at least for me. So check and make sure you loaded the kernal and the kernal source file...might help you....hope it does.

Pete,

Yes, they are separate rpms. Select kernel source when you do the install or do something like 'urpmi kernel-source' later.
