Nvidia 4 and Mandrake 10.1 Official release problems
 

I have Mandrake 10.1 official edition, wich i installed from LQ. Almost the entire installation went ok. When I want to perform a test of the screen settings, and do believe me I have chosen the right settings: Nvidia 4 (generic), 1024x768 16bit, a nice testscreen appears, I click that YES these setting are ok. Then BOOM and the screen flickers like crazy. Due to this I've never had any GUI since the screen starts to flicker.
-I've downloaded the new Nvidia drivers, but here a problem occurs.
I start the install in right runlevel, with X turned off.
Then the installation keeps asking me for kernel sources.

First i type this:
uname -a

Output:
Linux localhost 2.6.8.1-12mdk #1 Fri Oct 1 12:53:41 CEST 2004 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP Processor 2800+ unknown GNU/Linux

I understand that My linux kernel version is 2.6.8.1-12mdk.

Then I type:
urpmi kernel-source-2.6.8.1-12mdk

Output:
no packages called kernel-source-2.6.8.1-12mdk

What do I do wrong!? Is there any possibilities to browse urpmi, sothat I can see what is aviable? Without corresponding kernel sources installed it doesn't install the Nvidia driver. When I type urpmi --help I get a huge list, but it is to long for my screen. How can I see through the list? This is a laptop.

I just did this yesterday. I am running the same exact kernel and came accross the same problem when I tried doing the urmpi install. The package name for the kernel source didn't end up being kernel-source-2.6.8.1-12mdk it was a little different.

What I did was go into 'Mandrake Control Center' then into 'Install Software' and did a search on 'kernel-source'. It listed all the possible kernel-source packages I could install. There is one kernel-source package called something like kernel-source-2.6-2.6.8.1-12mdk (the 2.6 part is listed twice in the package name). That is the package you want to install. Just check mark it and click install and your done. You should then be able to run your setup on the NVIDIA driver.

I can't even get a GUI at all. The screen anly goes crazy and flickers like a maniac. I found out how to search URPMI. The results were taht I found: kernel-source-2.6, I think that this must be it. It wasn't installed on my system. The repetition of the 2.6 that You mentioned might correspond with this kernel. I will try it as fast as i get acces to my Mandrake 10.1 CD's. A lots of thanks for the help. Hope the skank will work after this. If not, then I'll be back for more troubleshooting.

PS: I have a wireless card that won't work in Mandrake. It's an Realtek RTL8180 Wireless LAN (Mini-)PCI NIC compatible. The brand is TOPCOM Skyr@cer PC Card 3011. Any smart ones on this one?
I've been looking for drivers, but I haven't found any yet.
It's a hard time without the internet. I don't like booting into windows for this program.

Anyone a bit electronics oriented here?
I'm also looking for a program to Linux that could do the same as Electronic workbench's Multisim package. Any ideas?

I spent a bunch of time yesterday trying to get my nvidia card working and I ran into the same problem you are having with the urpmi kernel-source. It wasn't until I went into the Software Manager and searched around in there that I found it was named slightly different than the acutal kernel. You may be able to edit your XF86Config file and put the "nv" back in it temporarily so that you can get your gui to come back up? Good luck.

I tried to turn back on "nv" in the XF86Config file. It won't work anyway. I found the kernel-source, installed it and installed the Nvidia driver. After installing the driver, X wouldn't start. I did fix this. Then everything should be ok. Reboots the system, I even get the Nvidia splashscreen. Äfter that I get a blue screen with a timglass mouse cursor. The computer works for a while and stops working. Then I'm left with a completely blue screen and a mousepointer. That's all. Like if it doesn't want to go any further. I've totally ran out of ideas. My computer is an Compaq Presario R3000 Laptop, AMD Athlon XP-M processor, Nvidia GeForce4 420 32mb.

I have tried Mepis Linux on my computer and it works without problems, but still it lacks when it comes to packages. Besides, Mepis is Debian based and doesn't have urpmi. I've been fighting with Mandrake for one week and I'm about to give up.

What you need to install for your kernel source is " urpmi kernel-source-2.6-2.6.8.1-12mdk" not the one you tried..I know it sounds crazy but I just went thru that too..Thats the source for your kernel.............Same as my kernel..I think it was on cdrom#3..
In you case I woulld also suggest you look at your monitor settings to see if they are correct..Thats important..

I think that the screen settings may be wrong in XF86Config. I need a 1024x768 setting. I get this listed in the file, but below that I also get a Sony, Dell and other screens. How can I edit this to make things right again? This is how my screen serrings look like in XF86Config:

Just wanted you to know that I as well have a topcom skyr@cer rtl8180 card (but a 4011b) and that I had the same problem as you. From what I heard is that the GNU/linux driver sucks ass! Since it's closed source anyway you can use the Windows XP driver using ndiswrapper. (After all that's probably the best driver cause they probably put more energy in that one than it the GNU/linux driver) http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/ it works great with my card! And is really easy to install! If you want to you can try a FREE DRIVER. Unfortunaley my card isn't supported (but the driver is for rtl8180 so check it out) http://rtl8180-sa2400.sourceforge.net/ it's not as easy to install (it takes more time) but the INSTALL file is detailed and there is a module_load script you can use... everything is in the INSTALL, hope yoy'll have better luck with the free driver than I had
