nv becomes nvidia in Mandrake 10.0 official

A minor but irritating problem: If I shutdown this PC, when I reboot I won't be able to startx until I go into XF86Config-4 and change the Driver under the section "Device' to 'nv' from 'nvidia.' It changes back every time to 'nvidia,' I change it back, etc. I guess it's sort of a form of enhanced security but maybe somebody can enlighten me as to why this is happening?

This is the section of XF86Config-4 to which I am referring, with the change made:

Section "Device"
Identifier "device1"
VendorName "nVidia Corporation"
BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce2 DDR (generic)"
Driver "nv"
Option "DPMS"
Option "IgnoreEDID" "1"

I suspect the reason is that the nVidia proprietary binary driver (named "nvidia") has been installed in place of the XFree86 open source driver (named "nv"). One would expect the proprietary driver to work better than the generic but often it doesn't. IIRC the uninstall instructions for the proprietary driver are included in its download package which can be obtained from the nVidia site.

I like your tag line a lot.

Thanks for the solution -- of course, you were exactly right. I was too impatient to find anything on nvidia's site so I used the Mandrake utility to remove the nvidia driver and the problem went away.

I can't help feeling that I should have figured this out on my own but that's what is usually most helpful about this forum -- stating the problem is often 90% of the solution.

Best regards,
Eric Lester
