No source code in Mandriva 2006 Free?
I recently upgraded from Mdk 10.2 to Mdk 2006 Free. I notice that the copy I've got doesn't include very many source packages, which is a nuisance for trying to install more software, especially as each thing expects devel packages with different names to do the same thing...
So I was thinking it would be a good idea to reinstall Mandriva (to get a clean system) and then compile important things from source to replace the pre-compiled RPMs and get the most recent versions. This will also be useful for building non-Mandriva supplied software.
So, which things are good to build? I was thinking
Kernel
X
GTK+ and GNOME
Qt and KDE
...
Anyone got any suggestions for other things that would be useful to build as either an exercise in compiling software, or are quite common dependencies for other programs?
Thanks very much,
- QS Computing.

Mandriva is a binary distribution so it won't have many source packages unless you download the source rpms. The free version includes all the devel packages necessary to build packages that depend on qt, kde, gtk, gnome etc. It even has the kernel source. If you did not install the devel packages during initial installation, then install them from the software installation section in the Mandriva Control Center. You may also benefit from setting up the main, contrib, updates and plf urpmi repos for your version of Mandriva using the instructions at http://easyurpmi.zarb.org.

Odd, I can't seem to find many devel packages available - I get most of them from rpmfind.net. It does definately have the Kernel source, which is something I suppose.
Is it possible that my copy (a DVD from the cover of Linux Format magazine a few months ago) has some packages missing, or have I missed something?

That could be the problem. The official Mandriva 3 disc set has all the necessary devel packages. You can also get them throught the Mandriva Control Center if you setup the urpmi repos as I suggested above.

Thanks, it seems that the urpmi repositories are working for me.
