Question NO SOUND on ASUS W2V!!!

Hi guys,

i've been on mandrake for one year or so on intel desktop platforms with "almost" no trouble. Actually I'm very happy with memory performances and stability.

Nevertheless, I'm really having a sound issue on my Asus W2V (915PM chipset) laptop runing on mandriva 2005LE. I don't have any sound AT ALL.

I've checked the kmix, alsamix volumes are not on mute.

The alsaconf detects the sound card:
hda-intel 00: 1b.0 Class0403: Intel Corp 82801FB/FBM/FR/FRW
then it configures the snd-hda-intel driver
However I still nave no sound

The problem seem to be the sound driver. When I run the the soundcard configure tool, in the hardware section, on the drak control center I get the following error message:
the "snd-hda-intel" driver for your sound card is unlisted.

I have no idea what to do?

thanks for the help!!!!

I seen a few instances where Mandrake and Red Hat simply don't have working sound when it comes to the newer ASUS motherboards. In fact, I have that problem myself. My plan is to get a different (and newer) linux distribution (probably Xandros).

http://www.linux-tested.com/results/asus_k8v-x.html shows the results for Red Hat 9 with the Asus K8V-X motherboard (the one that I have; yours is not listed). For audio, it says: "Audio chipset not supported in Linux and no drivers available." Roughly speaking that translates to the hardware manufacturers not supporting linux like they should. They write plenty of software drivers for windows, it would only seem fair to do the same for linux.

I see 2 possible solutions for you:

(1) disable the built-in sound on your motherboard and use an add-on sound card that is supported by the linux you have.

(2) get a newer linux distribution that can use the built-in sound card on your motherboard. When looking for your new linux distribution, you might want to go to http://www.linux-tested.com to verify that your new distribution will work with the sound card on your motherboard.
