No sound from cdrom

I installed Mandrake Linux 10.1 official on a compaq presario. I have system sounds. When I put a cd in the cdrom, kscd comes up, and appears to be playing the cd, but I can't figure out how to get sound. I checked out the mixer, all looks good. Checked out the volume, its up. The same thing happens with grip. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

Check to see if you have an audio cable going from the cd drive to the sound card cd in plug. Often, manufacturers of business systems will not include this. Also, in the sound mixer, check your pcm and cd levels, and that the cd input isn't muted. Just because the master volume is full on doesn't mean you will have sound.

If you're using KsCD, try going into the extras button and then configure KsCD. If the "Use Direct Digital Playback" button is unchecked, checking it may give you sound. You could also try changing the audio backend to see if one of the others gives you sound. You have a slightly older version of KsCD than I do, so those options may be different or may not be there in your version.

The "Use Direct Digital Playback" button is basically a work around for not having an analog audio cable for your CD drive. The audio cable is very cheap to buy (a few bucks at a computer parts store usually) and easy to find where to plug it into the CD drive, but it can be tricky to find out where to plug it into the motherboard if you are unfamiliar with the innards of your computer. It's one of those things that most people probably do on their own.
