Recently upgraded to Mandy 2007 Free from 2006 Free. No problems with anything EXCEPT, the sound disappeared. I've checked the settings via Kmix, Alsamixer, aand other routes as shown below and can't find the problem. I haven't found any muted channels anywhere, the system sees my Audigy sound card, the kernel module that the soundcard has always used has been loaded and the volume are not on zero. A post in another part of the site mentioned that maybe the permissions were changed during the install but I'm not sure where to check for that.
Does the Audigy have front & rear outputs? Maybe you are plugged into the wrong output on the card.
No, I have a headphone output and a line output but I'm using the same one that was being used when the sound worked. I've checked the speakers and they work fine on other devices. All of the hardware components are unchanged from their pre-upgrade connections when they worked fine
Do you use KDE as your desktop environment? If you do, check that the sound system is enabled in the Control Center (System > Configuration > Control Center in the menu system).
If you use Gnome, Open the Sound configuration dialog (Preferences > Sound in the System menu) to enable and configure sound.
I use KDE and I've checked that the sound system is enabled. Also, None of the channels in Kmix are muted and the system has detected my card and loaded the same module it has always used.
SIlly question. Is it possible somehow a setting got changed in you CMOS?
I know for some strange reason on the board I have if an error occurs (regardless of the OS you are using) SOMETIMES these settings will change on me.
I have a option for "Plug and Play OS". If this setting is set to Yes, my sound dose not work in Linux, but change it back to No and it works fine. But if it's set to Yes during an upgrade, the sound drivers do need to be removed and re-installed (probably it's really in a configuration file somewhere, but I have always just re-installed the Linux sound driver).
I have the SBLive! 5.1 sound card here, and I use by default the snd-emu10k1 driver, but in some Mandriva versions, it has not worked. I switched to the audigy driver and that seemed to make it work again. Now, in Mandriva 2007.0 I am able to use the default driver OK (snd-emu10k1).
Since you are trying to use the snd-emu10k1 driver, if it does not work, use MCC to switch to one of the other compatible drivers (audigy, or emu10k1).
I tried switching the BIOS "Plug and Play OS setting to 'no' with no results. Also tried switching to the different Audigy sound drivers (audigy-emu10k1,emu10k1x) swiching the settings from ALSA to Open Sound System to Auto-detect without finding a winning combination.
I guess it would'nt hurt to try these two commands:
$ amixer set Master 100% unmute
$ amixer set PCM 100% unmute
These are for alsa, not kmix. This is what I had to do to get sound with audigy 2 card in Debian Etch, apparently there is a bug in alsa. But Mandriva 2007 also muted sound when I upgraded the kernel, but that was resolved through kmix.
Tried that but still no sound. I'm going to try borrowing another sound card from a friend and seeing if maybe the current board itself is bad. Will advise
I use an Audigy 2 card. Sometimes the default Mandriva 2007 install chooses digital rather than analogue output. Just a thought to check and uncheck that button which is on the second tab in kmix.
Thanks for that last post Ray. My distro did, indeed, default to the digital setting. Wasn't sure what the digital/analog button was for in the mixer but I just hadn't gotten around to changing it just to see what would happen. I now have sound and mic active again
