I think mysql on Mandriva is the root of your problem right now. You should ask about that in a separate thread or in a Mandriva Forum. I'm sorry that I couldn't help you more.

# urpmi mysql-administrator
# mysql-administrator
A gui called MySQL Administrator opens. Enter your localhost, root, <your_root_password>. Select >connect>Tools>Manage Connections>Connections>Add Connection.

In connection name put '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock', root, and <your_root_password>. Note that it has by default selected port 3306 leave this alone. Select 'Apply Changes' and reboot. Then Enjoy Mythtv all you want.

Whee Doggie. How often does solution turn out to be so simple...
