No GUI on boot and root password will not work.

I just installed Mandrake 10 on a HP Pavillion P3 with 512meg RAM. Installation seems to have gone okay, but on original bootup, right before the GUI starts the computer displays a blank screen and just sits there. When I loaded 'failsafe' to try and diagnose the problem, I can't login as root user. I thought on the off chance that I typed it incorrectly during install, so I reinstalled Mandrake 10, making sure I typed it correctly, and same result. The computer would not load GUI and root password would not work. Other accounts I made during setup actually login, but I was under the impression I had to be root to make configuration changes. I am pretty sure the OS is not damaged from setup because I successfully used the same CD's on another computer just days ago.

I am still very much a newbie at this, so I would appreciate any help you have to offer.

Thanks

nevermind, figured out how to become superuser 'su' without root password, root password now works that I got Xwin going. ran XFdrake and xf86cfg to get it to go into gui mode.

Thanks anyways
