No Device Icons on Desktop_SOLVED

Hi there normaly with linux I can mark the device Icons in configuration somewhere that allows my devices like "cd Writer" or Floppy ect to show up on desktop , but for some reason I have marked with" x "next to the Device types I want shown on my Desktop in KDE ControlCentre under Behavior-Device Icons, but they wont show up on screen. Does anyone know how to activate these icons to show up on desktop? It just makes life easier sometimes if there on your desktop so you dont have to keep using command line to mount and unmount cdroms & harddrives ect all the time, Normaly if I mark next to device I want shown & then press Apply that its normally all I would have to do to get them to show up on Desktop. (But I could be wrong as a learning linux user) Thanks Jason..

Works for me...

Did you also check "Show device icons:" right above the individual device icons?

Yep ,sure have, I checked all the possibilities in that window but no luck. I have had this problem 4 awhile now as I even reinstalled Mandrake10.1 a couple of times as I messed things up abit with updating ect as a learning process and I get the same problem everytime, I dont know if its to do wuth anything in bios as I had to change certain things in bios a couple of times in past like switching off plug'n play ect to get certain tools in windows to open up and problems with dma as well.Im not sure but I dont think I had this problem bewfore I changed certain things in bios, I will try again and see if that helps. Mandrake is 1 of only that I can remember that has given me trouble with plug'n play, and Smart monitoring tools in bios that affects performance with system but its still one of my favourites, Is there anything else anyone can think of that could be causing the device Icons not to show?

Sounds like a Mandrake bug then. Perhaps they have a bugzilla you can search in?

This has been happening to me for about a week. Whenever I list my external usb hard drive in fstab, and reboot with it running, my device icons dissapear from the desktop.

It doesn't matter whether I have the device icons set to show or not, once I have clicked the mounted/unmounted hard drive partitions not to show, then they all go - cdrom's, floppy, etc. Like a latched relay that can't be reset.

Camera cards don't seem to be affected by this problem, even though they are also /dev/sdx's. My solution has been to leave the usb drive out of the system except for weekly backups.

Reading through the posts, I have noticed quite a large number of complaints concerning all types of external drives. CDRW's won't burn, HD's can't be formatted, etc. Apparently, harddrake2 just doesn't like external drives.
