Hi there,
got it all sorted, I had begun to make a bit of a mess of my system and was getting a bit out of my depth, so wiped the lot and started fresh with 10.2, I was very careful to ensure all the packages I wanted were installed.I'm lucky in that I always back up my important docs to DVD and a seperate drive regularly (old habits die hard thankfully) and I have a couple of fairly big hard discs to fill up with whatever I fancy. If I come accross anything else I may need, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.
Bit of a brutal method though to be honest. still it gave me a bit of an insight into what can go wrong if you muck about too much without finding out what you're doing first!

Thanks again for your help guys.

thanks for the responses guys, I tried the rpm install from the cd's and got

[root@localhost root]# rpm -i /mnt/cdrom/media/main/gcc2.96-cpp-2.96-0.83mdk.i586.rpm
file /lib/cpp from install of gcc2.96-cpp-2.96-0.83mdk conflicts with file from package cpp-3.3.3-1
file /usr/bin/cpp from install of gcc2.96-cpp-2.96-0.83mdk conflicts with file from package cpp-3.3.3-1

just my luck to get conflicts! any idea how to resolve this? uninstall cpp-3.3.3-1 and start over perhaps?

As a rule I stick to mdk rpm's wherever possible to avoid this sort of problem and I have installed lots of software using urpmi with absolutely no problem at all , however I need gcc to compile my scanner drivers from source as it is not supported under mdk 10.1 (CE or OE) or SANE.
I'm kinda loathe to removing glibc anyway as after the warnings posted and doing a bit of research it seems that to do so would be linuxicide!
try this dude
urpmi --force /mnt/cdrom/media/main/gcc2.96-cpp-2.96-0.83mdk.i586.rpm
