"No CDROM device found" under installation of Mandrake10 with LG CD-ROM

I am new to Linux.
I have 3 cd's with Mandrake 10 install files. I want to install it on "old" Pentium 75MHz [32MB RAM] with bootable CD-ROM (it is bootable under windows98 so far) - LG 52x model CRD8521B - firmware 1.02 (same IDE as HD [HD is master, CD-ROM is slave]). I have followed instruction from the site
mandrake.binarycompass.org/Mandrake-old/8.0/i586/install.htm
I have prepared bootable floppy with: advanced.msg boot.msg cdrom.rdz help.msg ldlinux.cfg vmlinuz
When I boot the system, diskette files are loaded, and after a while "No CDROM device found" is displayed, when ENTER pressed a prompt is displayed "Please inset the additional drivers floppy".
I guess some additional files should be copied to the diskette from the installation CD-ROM's. Which ones???

After pressing ALT-F3 I have the log:
*spawning a shell
*cannot open shell - /tmp/sh doesn't exist
...
*have to ismod ide-cd
*needs cdrom
*needs ide-cd
* succeeded ide-cd
*looking for ide media
*have to ismod sr_mod
*needs scsi_mod
*needs sr_mod
* succeeded sr_mod
*looking for scsi media
*looking for Compaq Smart Array media
*looking for DAC960
*unsetting automatic

Which additional files should be copied to the diskette from the installation CD-ROM's ???

Could be the CD-ROM model is not supported by Mandrake - according to compatibility list
www.mandrakelinux.com/en/hardware.php3

Now I am searching LG site for linux drivers.
Actually found some bad news (LG vs. Linux):
www.newsforge.com/hardware/03/10/27/0218209.shtml?tid=81&tid=87
forums.windrivers.com/showthread.php?t=53289
www.mandrakelinux.com/en/errata.php3#badlg
www.mandrakelinux.com/en/lgerrata.php3

Hour after hour of searching the web (thanks for google!) I found that the problem might be solved by updating flash-firmware to version 1.03

Let's see.
I have found updates:
forum.firmware-flash.com/dl_firmware.php?download_id=372
but only 2.0 available ("not tested" status for OEM version). I have given up with updating the ROM (don't want to kill mine). I have changed the drive to another one I've got (Sept'2001 production) with flash-firmware of 1.04 version.
NOTHING has changed: "No CDROM device found".

I shall try with one more drive, not LG this time. I,m just looking for one...

I'll let you know.

Any idea, any help will be greatly appreciated.
B.

hi,

I had also encountered the same problem while installing mandrake 10 using the CDs. Try out the following (it worked on my comp):

boot into your windows, theopen the first CD and read the file install.txt, point 2.
You'll need a floppy( to make a boot floppy using rawrite). hopefully this'll work.

As per my experience, I think tht Mandrake 10 will too slow on your machine. Still, u can always give it a try !

best of luck

enjoy!

Thanks Kerr for your post.
I was adviced by a friend of mine to choose less demanding distribution. My computer is too slow for mandrake 10. That is sure. Incompatibility of my CD-ROM may not be a problem with another Linux.
