Nividia low fps*AGP robs (continued)

My ls mod has the following lines:

nvidia 4809036 12
sis-agp 5568 1 (I have a SIS chipset)
agpgart 31016 2 sis-agp

so i guess the modules are being loaded.

the system is apparently running in option 2 of NvAGP and producing ~1200fps with glxgears

i've noted that it comes up with a warning now saying
"Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0"." when i run glxgears

but i'm sure all XLib files are installed.

ok............please do this.

look at your xfree86.0.log. it's in /var/log. look through all the lines & post any sections of it here that you might find an error code. an error code would have this at the beggining of a line.......... (EE).

that's nothing relevant to your situation. it's just to show you where the (EE) errors would be & what to look for. if you can't find any errors, post back, then we'll go to plan G, which has yet to be devised, but i'm working on it.

oh.............one more question that i don't think has been touched on yet. what kernel version/source are you running?

Otis, there are no errors (EE) in the log file

i typed "uname -r" for the kernel version (i hope this is correct) and got

"2.6.3-7mdk"

i got the version of the kernel source by typing "rpm -qi kernel-source" ( i hoper this is also the right way)

Hope you don;t mind me joining this thread....

these are my problems:

1) My computer is locking up. Every morning I come in and I cannot wake it out of sleep. If I remote login in and kill the X process, it goes back to the login screen and everything is good for a while. I'm thinking that maybe the video card is causing the problem?

2) When i run glxgears, I get these results:
3030 frames in 5.0 seconds = 606.000 FPS
3039 frames in 5.0 seconds = 607.800 FPS
3027 frames in 5.0 seconds = 605.400 FPS
3028 frames in 5.0 seconds = 605.600 FPS

Some additional info, per your suggestion, I down graded from version 6111 of the drivers to 5336.

Also, in case it matters, this is my LILO options:
append="quiet pci=biosirq devfs=mount hdd=ide-scsi acpi=off apic=no"

I am running Mondrake 9.2.

I set Option "NvAGP" "3" just today, so I'll wait until tomorrow to see if this is what is causing the lock up problem.

Finally, I am using a KVM switch, but I don;t think that would cause this??

i haven't abandoned this thread, it's just that i'm sorta out of ideas & have been researching & thinking a bit.

one thing i have come across repeatedly mentioned is if you have ACPI enabled (which has to do with power management) it can interfere with vid card performance due to shared irq's. if you want to test that theory, do the following.........

go to Mandrake Control Center->boot->boot manager (or something similar. i'm at work & can't remember the exact module, but it's not "autologin" or "boot splash"). look for the ACPI options & make sure it's set to "off", not "force" or "on". then, go to MCC->system->services & make sure ACPI is not set to start at boot. finally, open lilo.conf & look at the ACPI entry in the "append =......." line & make sure that reads "acpi=off". here's mine as an example..........

if that doesn't do it, when i get home from work tonight we're gonna try to symlink the nvidia libglx drivers to make sure that's what XFree is using. i still think the problem is you can only run NvAGP option 0 or 1 when you need option 3. why it won't allow that eludes me.

try the ACPI stuff & report back. i'll post again later tonight when i'm home & at my Linux box.

With regard to what you said about the booting options.... after isntalling the 6016 (?) drivers, the system boots into KDE in all options 0,1,2,3 but to no increase in glxgear fps. just to make that clear.

K, have checked for any signs of ACPI , none in the boot loader , none in system startup.

i changed lilo.conf to read as ACPI=off

ran lilo -v

then rebooted.

no change in glxgears.....

Something strange is happening here.... i ran glxgears for longer than the usual 20seconds and this came up... strangely, the number rose when i started running more windows and starting superkaramba and kopete!!! what on earth is goin on!!!! my low taskbar still takes ages to minimise as it slides across to the right!!!

getting some pretty erattic scores. but strange that glxgears starts off at 1200fps for the first 20 seconds and more!

ok.............let's go waaaaay back..........

how are you running glxgears? the proper way is normal screen size.......not minimized to the tray, not full screen. if you do it either way then normal you're either gonna get false results to the plus or minus (minimized or full screen). what does glxgears give you at normal size, which is (roughly) a 4"x4" window, with all other apps closed/not running? please post before we go any further.........

and, don't use the kicker bar hiding speed as a gauge. that speed can be set manually by right clicking on the kicker->panel menu->configure panel->"hiding" tab->animate panel hiding (slow to fast). check if that's set to slow, or even enabled & speed it up if need be.

Sorry, i was normally running it in the small window you mentioned and it gave me ~1200 as i have been stating. This number increases when i minimise it and decreases when i maximise it.

Sorry for the confusion. The animation of the kicker is still jerky at fast animation but i shall no long use that as a measure of the graphics as suggested....

where to now?

ok..........

we're gonna go back to the symlink theory for the libGL stuff. but, before we blindly do something, please post the output of the following, so i can be sure of what is linked to what. open a terminal, su to root, then cd to /usr/lib. then, type the following & post the output here.

that will list all libGL libraries in the /usr/lib directory, their permissions, & most importantly, what they're linked to. your libGL.so.1 should be linked to libGL.so.6106, which would be the Nvidia driver (or something similar.......at work again, so i'm going from memory). if it isn't linked to the Nvidia driver, then we'll make it so.
