nforce2 chipset (new drivers avail??)
 

I followed instructions found elsewhere on this board and DLed and installed
NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0261.mdk91up_2.4.21_0.13.athlon.rpm
but that didn't help and then I found instructions saying to DL and install
NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0261.src.rpm and that didn't work either.


is there something else I can try? I'm a newB so explicit instructions are appreciated.

I am running Mandrake 9.2 on a Chaintech 7Njl3 mobo with the nForce2 chipset (currently unrecognized by the system)

For the src rpm, you will need the kernel source too. This is not installed automatically.

Here are some instructions. First make sure you have the 2.4.22-10 kernel. If you have a different one, you will have to get the source for that one instead. Check out some mandrake rpm sites. To check the kernel version, type this on the command line:

uname -r

Get these files and go to the directory you saved them to and su to root. The files:

If it is the correct kernel, then do the following, else substitute the kernel source rpm for your version which you have found and downloaded.

rpm -i kernel-source-2.4.22-10mdk.i586.rpm
tar -zvxf NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0261.tar.gz
cd nforce/nvnet
make
make install

Now your module is set up, try configuring the net card. If you get errors, try 'make clean' in the nvnet directory and then redo 'make;make install'.

PS once it is working, you can remove the nforce directory.

what if the src I already installed is wrong?

I thought I got the one that matchs my distro but am not sure.

Sorry, there are so many posts about the onboard NIC that I always assume that is the problem. Rereading(properly reading) your post I see that you have a different issue.

My nforce2 is at home, i will look and see what my harddrake says later.

The drivers from the nvidia site are just for nvnet and audio, the chipset drivers should be fine from your install. Maybe there was a problem there. Also, if they were compiled in rather than added, there will be no module desc.

Is there actually a problem or is it just the description? Usually an install of 9.2 on an nforce2 board will work fine except for the network. You can then add nvidia graphic drivers, rather than the default, if you have an nvidia card. Otherwise, it is just the network card that needs attention.

my onboard NIC was fine
 

The onboad NIC is fine ... the LAN setup perfect .. thats the "KEEPER" feature of this install lol it's the first time I had the time to try to make it work and it worked wi no user intervention.

the symptoms I am suffering from are
lack of sound
no video playback
and harddrake2 freezing whenever I try to configure the audio module.

the mobo has onboard sound and I thought that might have been the problem even tho the first install of mandrake seemed to recognize it correctly. the correct chipset shows up in harddrake. so I disabled it in the bios and installed a soudnblaster card with an ensoniq chip on it. and reinstalled mandrake cause compared to win it didn't take much time. but I am having the same problem with the sb pci card.. the chip on the card shows up in harddrake but when I click on configure module it freezes.

I thought that since nearly all the components of the nForce chipset were showing up "Module: unknown" in red that there might have been a conflict there.

my video card seems to be working right ... it's a geForce2 mx 400 from chaintech i ordered them at the same time hoping they would "match" lol

Check for muted sound, if not mandrake 9.1 and 9.2 makes you load the specific driver sometimes, even though its recognized, check that as well. But it sounds if the pci sound card didnt work as well, than maybe the muted vol is the issue. No video playback? WHat type of video? DivX XViD mpg files, should play fine. My radeon 9800 is under the generic VESA driver, and video playback is fine.

Audio module failed to load among others
 

the last couple times I've booted I hit esc to view verbose mode and noticed that the audio module for my chip failed to load. I saw other modules were failing to load also but Iit goes to fest and I can't read them. how do I view a list of what hass loaded and what hasn't?
