Newest nvidia drivers won't initialize on boot...

Ok, so I am a fairly seasoned linux user by now...but i have a situation, maybe someone can figure this out.

on my girlfriend's PC, she has a geforce fx 5200 (64mb ram). i installed the newest drivers (66xx something) on 10.1 and started x and everything worked fine.

but upon a restart, it will not boot to X. i have to reinstall the driver everytime, and then it works without a hitch.

I have done "modprobe nvidia" and added "nvidia" to /etc/modules

should I add "nvidia" to modules.conf or modprobe.conf in /etc/ ?

thanks for your help guys, you have been gracious in the past.

again, mandrake 10.1 (32-bit running on an AMD-64 athlon), geforcefx 5200 and the latest nvidia drivers (which work everytime on my fx 5600 and athlon xp 2700 in 10.1)

add it to /etc/modprobe.preload

Code:
# /etc/modprobe.preload: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file should contain the names of kernel modules that are
# to be loaded at boot time, one per line. Comments begin with
# a `#', and everything on the line after them are ignored.
# this file is for module-init-tools (kernel 2.5 and above) ONLY
# for old kernel use /etc/modules

slamr
nvidia
