Newbie w/ Mandrake 7.0

Greetings all!

Am new to Linux and eager to learn! Someone gave me an unopened copy of Mandrake 7.0 and so I am starting there.

I am unable to install thus far - the problem appears to be at the end of the install process. I get a 'LILO FAILED' error which won't let me do anything else other than keep clicking on the same error message. Therefore I have to reboot the machine and start from the beginning each time.

Some info -

I am installing onto a new, blank, 40 Gig harddrive and am accepting the default partitions offered by the setup program.

Computer specs are: 1Ghz AMD Duron, 256 MB Ram, 40 Gig HD.

I did create a bootdisc per the instructions in the setup.

Not sure what other info is needed at this time. Will appreciate any help I can get and be more than glad to provide the info needed.
Thanks in advance!

Download a newer version of Mandrake (latest stable is 9.1).

That version is really old.

Linux improves be leaps and bounds every few months, so it will always be best to get the latest version.

It would be a good idea to check your BIOS setup to see if something in there may prevent writing to your disk's Master Boot Record (MBR), the place where Lilo installs and also a target of some kinds of viruses that your BIOS may be guarding against. If your problem is a BIOS setting, a Linux upgrade won't help and changing the setting should let you install 7.0 properly.
