I know I am rambling, but the links can be usefull to somebody else finding your thread

then rpmfind if you keep wanting to use 9.2. Good luck Still post if you need help, and do post once you solved your problem |
well i remembered reading somewhere in the doc pages that windows was a good way to find info
about you modem or any hardware anyway here is what i found using SiSoft Sandra Code:
SiSoftware Sandra using the device # 044E i'll try to find something Quote:
wife i can make it work better the windoze after playing in mandrake i find just about everything i do is faster theres more native support for file ext.(dont have to have abunch of programs to install after the os) load times are way faster then my winxp times i mean where talkin apples to oranages here winxp has about a 2min load time where as mandrake loads about 45 secs maybe and believe me i will post if i need more info thats what boards are for right thanks again blame |
I do not know which kernel you have, did you try these
I know in your first post you were after a more recent package http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/pack...ndrake/8.22a4/ there is rpmbone.net or sthg like that to consider instead of rpmfind “Mate”, you can get a linux cd or dvd for just a few $, £, euros I appreciate you have 9.2 at hands, but this is rather old, and in terms of security not a good idea. You will get much more up to date software with 2005-2006-2007, even if your PC is old it should work (you can trim services), use xfce (or whatever desktop) rather than KDE or gnome, plus you may want Koffice or openoffice out of the box If you struggle with the modem this is not going to help, but you can blame winmodems Quote:
http://infohost.nmt.edu/~val/howto.html That might help, even make you laugh, or not Quick guide to get a girlfriend using Linux (might apply to wife?) http://www.bunchos.com/_wp/?page_id=3 you can look at linuxadvocacy as well The fact we had zero viruses and no blue screen of death helped here to convince, Eye-candies a bit, but not much; openoffice performance is taken for granted, Gimp impressed big time. Firefox and opera impressive. Transition from outlook to Kmail, I have not heard a single complaint. I have tried to explain the ethics of open source etc, but at the end of the day, users are users: applicationson the desktop is what counts |
almost fixed after alot of reading and rereading
ok just to inform i think i'm gitting the hang of this in a way if i would of understood
what you guys where tellinig me to do this problem would of been solved acouple of days ago but i think i'm gitting closer to the end by compiling ltmodem 8.30a source code to my kernel (hope thats the right thing to call it i just didnt relize the structure of things i'll let you know how it turns out Quote:
dude i got a kick out of those web pages the wife will come around the main reason i wanted to use linux was well its free now i feel it far superior to windoze and i've been using windows since 3.1 i just dont really remember using it other then for games jeez that was awile ago thanks for the help blame |
well the modem is now working in linux but i need to config pppd <---- updated
what do i do now anybody thanks blame |

That was one of the first advice visit http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ basically what it does is to help you select a place where the packages are located. Then using drakconf the PC will download whatever application you chose and it just will work You get addresses like http://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.f...free/9.2/i586/ One drawback is that it needs first to download the list and description of the sofwtare. I had a cursory look there no ltmodem package (I just searched for modem, and not in all repositories) Compiling is fine, just another learning point Be sure to install your kernel source and headers (should be installed by default from you cd) A good way to read the doc from the modem is cd path_to_ltdmodem_uncompressed less INSTALL or less README (Q for quit) I like this link telling you why linux is not windows http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm Go to LQ bookmark and search for newbie there are lots of info/guide (rute, newbie admin guide...) |

What messages do ypu get? Make another console as root and type tail -f /var/log/syslog (this will tell you all the system messages) then start your modem/connection from another terminal Really strange that ppp would not be supported You can use kppp to setup your connection parameters but wvdial is far superior when it comes to debugging and getting good message error. Do the tail thing with wvdial (wvdial on your cd I hope otherwise it becomes a circular thing) this is wvdial for 9.2 you can download it and put it on a floppy it may require another package http://anorien.csc.warwick.ac.uk/mir...-3mdk.i586.rpm |

but heres what it is in konsole Code:
[root@localhost root]# wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf Quote:

because there using RH 8.0 on their server or thats what their web page says so i think i dont have pppd set up at all windows all you have to do is use create a new connection wizard select a few options and set your phone# and password and its done so should i use kppp to set it up? will i still be have to use wvdial to connect to the internet? i think i will put this all down in a text file when i get dont so other people can just use it as a ref-file thanks again blame |
"kppp and wvdial do the same thing"
kppp is just a GUI. Keep going with wvdial. You are doing great |

I have not come accross this before. Looks like a configuration issue do man wvdial, man wvdial.conf or google for this error messages If nopbody else come to help, I / you can ask a mod to move the thread to the forum dedicated to internet / communication etc EDIT A dumb suggestion of mine: Have you tried the "dumb mode parameter" in wvidal if you read below there is probably some clues http://axion.physics.ubc.ca/ppp-linux.html http://docs.kde.org/stable/en/kdenet...html#id2561955 The PPP daemon is alarmed by the fact that all the data it receives has bit 8 set to zero. In most cases this simply indicates that the remote PPP server isn't running yet. You might still be confronted by a login prompt that echoes back all the data sent by your pppd. Anyhow this is beyond me am afraid |
ok well here is my first post under linux
everything seems to working ok but the coonct speed isnt what i thought it would be in windoze it connects around 52 to 40 kbps in linux it connects @ 37333 bps thank you for the help Emmanuel_UK and Camorri i still think i'm going to write this all down and send it to linmodem.org for a ref file for other windose converts seems like all the other HowTo's i read didnt explain the fact that linux is so easy once you learn the way things are done problem solved |
congrats. I am impressed. Well done. This was pretty fast
what did you do? just launched pppd first? the speed.... hum, I kind of remember in some cases non open module for modem are on purpose limited to 37 you can try various initialisation string (copy the modems.inf file from Zinblows for inspiration) If you do a howto please post it here as well |
Quote:
on to the way things work but i still feel that i'm learning very quick by triall and error what i did was use kppp Gui then set the ppp commands i'm not sure what i was missing but i think it had something to do with the id commands sent when you log in (edit=date*) there was a file i was missing with the secret which was just my password(/edit) could you explain a little more about zinblows and initialisation string thanks again blame :newbie::Pengy: |
Quote:
This is the initialisation string that tell the modem how to behave. Sometimes by tweaking them you can achieve compression, better rate etc. There is windows txt file probably called modem.inf with that info in it (the other way it to set Zinblows modem in log mode and look in the log for the string). My experience was that this is a bit complicated and does not always work. I have a modem that randomly accept 56k (<5%) while in Zinblows it is always 56k |
