NEWB: touchpad OR usbmouse, not both ANYMORE!

hi you there!
I'm just registered to bring in a question.

Mandriva LE2005 on HP Pavillion zv5540: until yesterday I used both touchpad and an optical USB mouse, both recognized and configured automatically at first installation. Everything works fine until yesterday...

I was opening the mouse configuration menu in the configuration wizard, and I've done nothing but closing the window, no tweaks, nothing... the mouse began to drift with no control and the touchpad no longer works.
I reboot: the touchpad works again but with weird values of acceleration, maxspeed, no longer responds to tapping....
"something" (or "someone", not intentionally...) changed the synaptics configuration in xorg.conf! (well, I was logged as root...)
I restored it with the backup file and touchpad was completely restored, but USB mouse did not works anymore, and I don't know where to put hands into...

hope someone could help
thanx

dunno how....

now I switch the laptop on and...
yes, mouse and touchpad works both again
but dunno why...

yesterday I reboot many times, trying with and without mouse, inserting mouse before and after booting and so on with no gain
today everything works, and I tweaked nothing else!

anyone could tell me why?

I had the drifting cursor problem with a Dell laptop before. They came out and replaced the whole keyboard, touch pad, etc. and it fixed the problem.
