New User Question...
I installed Mandriva using the mini cd...nothing works except firefox, and apparently icewm.
I can't download things, or install them.
Am I missing something vital? Do I have to download the full install? My internet is not very fast...

Is the mini CD like a live distro? If yes it might explain why you cannot download to add to it.
Slow? do you mean you do not have broadband?
Then it is maybe best to purchase a full mandrake distro (that will only cost about 5£, or buy a magasine with a cover DVD). There a few web sites for this. It will be faster and easier
Also consider Knoppix as a live distro if you want to test your equipment, in further post you will need to tell people what equipemtn you have.
Anyhow welcome to linux

did you check the md5sum after downloading?
I would imagine that errors are more common with slow connections. Secondly, it's advisable to burn system CD:s with low speed, like 4x, to decrease the amount of errors.
If your connection sucks, it may be smart to order the CD:s form internet or buy a mag where you can get them.

I got a full 3 cd copy of the installation cds(yay for friends with faster internet than me) and I'm no longer having those problems. I still have to figure out how to access the files stored on my slave harddrive and install stuff because I'm new to linux...

Do not hesitate to ask for help (after doing some homework if possible)
I recommend reading rute (search for it in LQ bookmark)
It is a good reading to start linux

You will find in MCC mandrake configuration Center the place to install rpms (software package).
Lots of them will be on the cds
Look in Lq bookmark for easyurpmi: this is a must
to help configuring sources for other rpms from web repositories
