New Graphic Card
Hi,
Right now I have a gforce 2 ultra card, with generic nvidia drivers.
Today I'm going to install an ATI 9800 PRO card.
What would be better just using a generic ati drivers in drakconf, or installing an ATI drivers found here
All I use linux for now is to run xampp, and bluefish. Also when I tried to install drivers for my nvidia card, I had some serious problems (it didnt' work).
Also if I go the generic drivers route. All I have to do is boot in text mode, rud drakconf and select ATI generic drivers correct?
Thx.

Looks like those drvers are older then the ones on ATI website.
Any particular reason why I should choose them instead of ATI ones, or just some generic ones?
Thx.

well, you'll want to use the drivers corresponding to your XFree86 version. You can use the generic ones, but you'll be losing tons of features from that card. With generic drivers, you'll get about 5-10% of the framerate you should be getting, not to mention no anti-aliasing, ansitropic filtering, advanced features for most games, etc. Also, what chipset are you running on your board? if it happens to be KT400, get ready for the ride of your life.

i got that working with my kt400, but still eventually shifted over to NVidia, they have much better drivers.

Well I have ASUS A7M266 MB, think it has VIA chipset?
As I said I don't play games, I just use linux to run xmms, xampp, and bluefish. Thats about it.
Will give the ATI drivers a try what a heck.
What do I need to do to back up my settings. So if intallation goes bad, I don't have to reinstall linux like last time.
Will making a copy of xf86config-4 be enough?
Thx.

thats one serious card for doing what youre doing, then, you'll never get what you could out of it. Yeah, just back up the XF86Config file youre using now so if anything goes crazy, you can just restore it
