How do I set up netwroking between 2 boxes running Mandrake 9.2 download edition?
I want to share the CDRW, DVD rom and HP PSC 2175 Multifunction device that is connected to on box with the other box which only has a cdrom drive.
Both boxes are running Gnome and are connected to the net through a D-Link Dl-707P router.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
To share the media drives, you can nfs, and to share the printer you can use cups. I believe Mandrake comes with both nfs and cups already installed. There is a browser based configuration utility for cups.
do this same thing b/t winXP and linux using samba?
Is there a way to share a CD-RW drive between a winXP (host of CD-RW) and linux (running samba) machine? I can probabaly get the linux one to mount the drive and read it, but how can I use something on k3b to use that same device. Is there a /dev/xxx entry or is there a way to make one?
Well, if the cdrom drive is an ide drive, then it mounts to hdx. If it's the master on the first slot, then it's hda. If it's the slave, then it's hdb, and so on for the next slots. I don't quite understand what you're asking about sharing, but I'll give it a try. Are you trying to extract data from a cdrom on a machine without linux installed? In that case, you'll probably just want to take the data off the cd and then copy it to your samba share. If linux is installed, then accessing it should be as simple as mounting it.
MAybe you can clarify your question a little, so I can help you a little better.

For clarification, I'm trying to be able to put a CD-R blank disc in my winXP machine with a CDRW drive; then, from my linux laptop which is networked to it, use something like k3b to burn data/image/audio from my linux laptop directly onto the CD-R in the winXP CD-RW drive using a native linux cdr program. Is this possible?

AFAIK you can not use a linux native program to burn files on a CDRW drive on a windows PC. I would assume that if you could share the drive you could copy files to it via the network but you would still need windows to burn.
That's a good question. Maybe it's possible to mount a network drive to a local device and then use it to write. I can't right now, but I'm going to take a look around and see if something like that is possible.
