Network settings crashin system

Hi all,

After much tearing out of hair I've finally managed to figure out what is causing Mandrake to mess up - the network settings.
Upon boot I have to go into interactive startup mode and tell it not to start up the network service or else it crashes straight off the bat.
Starting up the graphical environment and trying to configure the connection through that also results in the system hanging when trying to restart the network.
I use an ADSL always on connection that doesn't require a login (the modem does all that). Under Mdk 10 CE I had the connection configured as a LAN connection and that always worked fine but 10.1 refuses to work like this. I tried configuring it as an ASDL PPPoE connection but it wouldn't connect (though it didn't hang the system which is a start I guess). The only 2 things that have changed are my version of Mandrake and the NiC I'm using (I changed motherboards recently and am using the internal one). I'm doing all this on a fresh install of MDK 10.1OE.

Any ideas?

I tried changing the connection to cable and straight away the system crashed. After looking around the forums I've seen a few others with the same onboard NIC as me (VIA-velocity) having the same problems.
I think I'll switch back to Gentoo, the so-called 'easy' Mandrake has caused me far more headaches than Gentoo ever did... I burned and booted off a Gentoo live-cd and that seems to have had no difficulties auto-configuring my network settings.

Thanks for your help anyway.

Support for your nic may have to be compiled into the Linux Kernel. Maybe with the next release of Mandrakelinux the problems you are having will be resolved.
