network not working!!
Hi all,
i was using FC2 but then made the switch to mandrake-10.0. i have this network problem that i thought i could get the answers here. well when i first installed mandrake i was able to connect to the net and do security updates, surf the net and so on, but you see when i restart my computer i was no longer able to connect to the net. i tried everything in the network option in the MCC but nothing seems to work. im on cable connection, i believe that is DHCP besides im using tulip as the driver for my network card which is connected to the system in the PCI slot. there is no linux driver available for this card!!. i dont know what else to provide here(i mean information) anyway let me know what infor is required for you guys to solve this problem so that i may provide to you. btw i faced this problem before and what i did was to reinstall the entire mandrake installation just to get my internet connection working, now that i have put the Question in this forum im going to wait to find answer to this problem and why it only happen to mandrake and not to other distribution like FC1, FC2, SUSE and slackware which i tried, before finally moving to mandrake!
any help is greatly appreciated.
thank you.

Re: network not working!!
During Installation of mandrake 10.0, when configuring internet connection did you check connect on boot? I forget exactly where it says it, but can always go to mandrake CC panel and go to internet connection and reinstall connection.
Are you using an ethernet card and a router?

Try to reconfigure yourintegrated ethernet card inside your Mandrake control center. I am not sure about "tulip" my card configured automatically with no problems. If you now try to configure manually, then that may be your problem.

Hmmm i tried configuring it manually but no use. and i could not use other drivers for my card. i really dont know what to do now. this is actually preventing me from using mandrake and i think i will go back to FC2 for the time being. the reason why i chose mandrake is that it is fast and better hardware support but dont know why it is behaving strangely towards my ethernet card. let me know if you ppl come across other solutions may be i can tried that too.
thank you.

Hummmm, I'm not expert, but there is some things you can try to solve this.
This is a dumb answer, but never forget the "golden rule" of networking problem: CCF (Check Cable First), test anotehr cable, etc
Try to ping your loopback IP (127.0.0.1) if it's working, your Ethernet card is ok, if not, that'S the problem.
Try to ping a external IP adress and it'S DNS. ie: ping 216.228.113.32 (wich is nvidia.com)
if working, try to ping nvidia.com if it's not working, you got a DNS problem, maybe you set it wrong?
try to disable any firewall, proxy, etc...
the last thing I see is hardware probleme, try with another card, if working, that's probably your card.
Hope this help
Take care
Alex
