Need to get Removable Drive Icons on Desktop

Hey All,

I have this peculiar problem with my Mandrake 10.1 desktop. I want to show my DVD-ROM and CD-RW drives on the desktop. I am in Gnome 2.6 and I can do this with my Fedora and SuSE machines, but not my Mandrake one. I can not right click on the desktop and add them (like SuSE), I cannot find anywhere to add them in either the Gnome Control Panel, or the Mandrake Control Center.

When I go into the Gnome Control Panel and click on "Desktop Preferences", I get a "Need to associate an application with this..." dialogue box. What?!?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Works with the kde desktop haven't tried gnome.

if your in kde you can have the undermentioned problems maybe these appl in gnome

If you are operating in root this can happen you must set behaviour for that screen.

If you are not root and right click isn't working then it could be you have disabled it under behaviour, or you have a more difficult problem I have not experienced.

Have you installed all the bugfixes since you put 10.1 on your computer?

This was (is) a known bug. Installing the updates should fix the problem.
Also some people (if they are using KDE) couldn't open Home. Apparently it has to do with certain USB devices being plugged into the computer and the result is that you have no CDRW, DVD or floppy icons on your desktop.

Anyway as i said the updates should fix the problem for you

HOPE THIS HELPS, .........CHEERS

Thumbs up

Hi and thanks to the responders of my question!

I have updated my 10.1 religiously and even use URPMI to get all of the extra stuff. I am glad to know that this is a known bug and not something that I personally did.............

Does anyone know of I update to Mandriva 2005 LE, will this fix the problem?

Thanks again so much!

Did you ever have the icons? What i mean is were they there when you first installed and then they disappeared, or were they just never there?

Thanks for the question........

In KDE, all fo the icons are there. In Gnome, only the Floppy icon is there (with other ones... like Home, Trash, etc.).

I am guessing that they were there at one time, but I didn't do anything that I am aware of to get rid of them....

This sounds like it may be a gnome specific problem as KDE has the icons. You said you have updated your system so that would rule out the "bug" situation that I was talking about earlier.

I don't use gnome much so I can't really try and give you anymore advice. It sounds like it is probably something simple but finding it can be a pain.

Does anyone else have any ideas about what's causing this?

Just another thought. In KDE you can right click on the desktop then select "configure desktop". In the behaviour window you can click on the device tab and in that window it lists all the devices that you would like to have shown on your desktop if they are available to your computer. If Gnome has this facility, it may be as simple as selecting the drives you need.

Can't hurt to try.........................

Thanks you guys so much.

I looked for the configure stuff in Gnome and couldn't try it, but I will try it in KDE and see if it transfers over to Gnome....... at least it is worth a shot.

I really appreciate you all helping me!

To everyone who was kind enough to try to help me out....... and to those who are interested, the solution I found is to open your Computer Icon on the desktop and drag the devices onto the desktop (left-click and drag).

The devices show as "unmounted drives", but they are there. The device icons also stay in the Computer folder... they do not mocve when you drag them out. They are only reproduced.

Thanks again!
