Need clarification on updating software

In MCC under Software there is an icon for Update. I was under the impression that this was to see if any of your installed software has a new version available.

However, I just learned that it is rather to update your sources to get the latest package information.

Is this correct?

And is there a way to automatically check to see if you have the latest versions of the software that you've installed and then to update it?

Thanks!

The easist way to update your system is in a shell and in root type in:
urpmi.update -a --wget;urpmi --auto-select --wget
This will update your sources and then download and update to installed sw.

In MCC, under Software, the "Update" icon is to allow you to update your software, like you expect. If you click on it, it will display the software you have installed that has new versions for Security patches, Bugfixes, or just normal updates. (You can select by checkbox any or all of the three options.)

There is also an "Update" button available on most of the Software screens, that is for the purpose of updating your urpmi sources, to make sure you have the most recent directory lists of software available.
