My sound doesn't work
I'm frustrated that my sound doesn't seem to work on linux. I dont know what it is, so if you guys can help me on this i'd appreciate it. Here's a screenshot of what I get when trying to play an mp3 from my xp partition.

I move it to the linux partition and the same thing happens.

Hi..!
Try using your console mode. And then, try executing this command:
[prompt]$ mpg123 [your mp3 file]
(you should install mpg123 to execute this command)
OR
try using another desktop environment (i.e. KDE, IceWM)
does it work?

I had the same thing happen here (MDK 10.1 community). First, click the upper left corner of XMMS, then Options > Preferences and check your output plugin. MY final solution was to uninstall ALL the xmms packages, then reinstall just xmms and xmms-alsa, then make sure it was configured to use alsa output. Has worked fine ever since.

First make sure that you have sound configured correctly in Linux.
cat the /etc/modules.conf file and post the results here... for starters.
If the modules appear to be loaded, go into kmix and turn up the sliders to about 90%.
The default mutes everything or makes it too faint to hear.
Then find a .wav file...
e.g. as root from a prompt
locate .wav
(btw: if locate returns no result or complains that the database is too old, type "nohup updatedb &" and wait about 10 minutes for it to complete... )
once you found the wave file try playing one manually.
Again from the prompt as root
play /usr/XXX/XXX/SOUND.WAV
adjusting the path as needed.
Do you see an error about rights on /dev/dsp?
If so try
chmod 766 /dev/dsp
and try again.
