Is my computer screwed up merely because i installed Linux?
No. Installing software does not break hardware like this.

thats good to know...I guess ill just give dell a call tomorrow. I dunno..its kinda an old computer ~~2001 so i doubt itll be under warranty. But i was thinking of just wiping out the whole thing(if it cannot be fixed-without a reinstall) and just do Mandriva only.(maybe later SUSE or someother distribution)..

I used to work at Dell on the phones helping people who messed up their computers. IF you call Dell tell them that you are only running Windows, since they won't help if you changed the system to what it was shipped with. "Only the Original configuration" not including updates or other OS's unless you got it from them. You probably right they won't help you unless you pay for the support since it is an older system. But like one of the older posters said boot to either a Windows or Linux CD, if you can boot to the CD's then chances are something is wrong with your HD and a simple reformating would fix the problem.

Cheers. Mandriva is a Great OS
