Try the command (as root) modprobe cmaudio and if it loads then try and play some sound. If the previous commands fails then try modprobe i810_audio and try to play another sound.

still it doesn't work. i had tried modprobe cmaudio but it fail. the following message shown:
modprobe: Can't locate module cmaudio
then i try modprobe i810_audio, it also fail:
/lib/modules/2.4.22-10mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/i810_audio.o.gz: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
modprobe: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.22-10mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/i810_audio.o.gz failed
modprobe: insmod i810_audio failed
How to solve?

What error do you get while trying to compile it? ... And at which stage?

I'm in the same boat. Installed mandrake 9.2 on a machine with an MSI main board. CM9739 audio chipset. Downloaded drivers from c-media. I'm fairly new to linux so I'm sure I screwed something up. 'config_x86_l1_cache_shift' undeclared here as well as a laundry list of other errors. Anybody with more detailed input? Everything but sound seems to have worked great. Video drivers compiled fine etc. Very pleased with operation of KDE. I'd just love to get my existing hardware working. Hate to run out and buy a soundcard when my other OS works fine with the onboard one. Thanks in advance.
