Must kill pppd and restart for it to work,Mandrake 10.0

I start pppd with the demand option. Sometimes I have to kill pppd and restart it before the modem will work. I didn't have this problem before I compiled my kernel, I'm using the newer 2.6.3 version. I can't find anything in the log files. It's not a major issue, just annoying to have to stop and restart pppd.
