Mplayer Works, But Gives Error Dialogs

I have just installed Mplayer and Mplayer-gui, in order to get access to older .wmv files I have from my days as a Windows user (now happily behind me!). All went well, and Mplayer, run from the command line, works like a champ. Mplayer-gui (executable is "gmplayer") will also play the files, but the first time it plays ANY file, it spits out zillions of error dialogs. It doesn't seem to have any effect on the playback, which works fine, and oddly, if I simply replay the same file, I do not get the error dialogs on second and subsequent playings of the same file. However, open a new file, and there they are again, for the first playback of that file.

The error dialog says: Error! alsa-control: mixer attach /dev/mixer: no such file or directory

I checked, and /dev/mixer is there, and even has rw permissions for everybody... and of course, I get full audio during playback, so it clearly found and is using a mixer.

Has anyone had this problem with Mplayer? I am using the standard stuff in the MDK 10.1 repositories, running it with my MDK 10.1 CE installation. Thanks for any and all help!

Hi,

Is /dev/mixer a link to another file?
I.e: does it look like this (important parts in bold):
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 11 Jun 1 2004 /dev/mixer -> /dev/mixer0

If so: How about the permissions of the file it points to.
I.e: Are the permission for /dev/mixer0 correct.

Hope this helps.

It cannot use your hardware mixer so it uses a software one. Try turning off a hardware mixing option or try using a different sound system likes arts.

Nope, /dev/mixer is not a link. I also tried forcing mplayer to use /dev/sound/mixer, which is a link - no joy there either.
