I re-installed the whole OS from scratch. This time I did everything exactly the way suggested. Installed all the mplayer stuff from the PLF sources only, so I would have no possible conflicts involving multiple versions of mplayer or codecs from multiple sources.

I have the exact same problem: mplayer crashes as soon as it's started. gmplayer works if started from a prompt as root. Is there anything else I can do here? I can't believe that everyone else is able to install the PLF-enhanced version of mplayer successfully, and I can't. There's gotta be a simple answer that I can't figure out.

ok, here's a hunch............

open userdrake (type userdrake as root in terminal or go to MCC->system->users & groups). on the "users" tab click on the user (you), then click the "edit" button, then in the pop up box click the "groups" tab. check if you have yourself set for the audio & video groups. if not, check them, click "ok", close userdrake, then try mplayer. if that's not the answer, then i'm sorry but i'm out of ideas. honestly, mplayer has never given me a problem & works like a charm.

Well my user account was not a member of either of those groups, so I checked them off. But that didn't solve the problem. Neither did checking off every other group, and making myself a member of all of them. I'm still seeing it crash immediately.
