I have never lost data or settings either, but REMEMBER when you get to the partitioning section only re-format your root partition - NOT your home partition.

Mandriva prefers 3 partitions: root,swap and home. When you let it auto-partition this is what it does. So that's what I recommend.

For the upgrade I would never recommend the 'upgrade' option. Download the latest version and burn and do a fresh install. Works every time.
