Mounting a cruzer USB drive- newbie style

Hi, my name is Amanda, I'm a 19 year old college student, and I just installed Mandrake linux about 2 weeks ago.

I have a SanDisk cruzer mini (256 MB) that doesn't seem to work in Mandrake. I'm not sure which release I have, but I think it's 10 or 10.1. When I insert the disk, I get a desktop icon that says "Hard Disc (part1) [/mnt/removable2]". I can double-click on it, and brings up Konqueror, but then the application hangs before it shows what's on the disk.

I found a similar thread here through a search engine, but I don't think it provided a solution. (And not only that, but I couldn't quite understand it, being so new to linux.)

Can someone help me get my USB drive working? I could really use it when classes start next week..

Thanks in advance,
Amanda

Did a litte searching, seems like the disk is formatted as fat and your comp is not liking it. Do you have windows box to try reformatting it as NTFS? Not even sure if you could. Just a guess, I'm just a little noob There also seems to be a way to get it working by modifying the fstab config file, need to add this line to it:

/dev/sda1 /mnt/cruzer vfat noauto,users 0 0

I believe its /etc/fstab, so as root in the console you would type vi /etc/fstab and then add that line in there, not sure what that would do. I really have no idea what I'm doing in linux yet , but maybe try tho formatting thing

I believe there's a little proggie called KDiskFree that allows you to mount stuff. I ave a Lexar Jumpdrive here and I just plug it in and then mount it. Then I can open it up. (although sometimes Konqueror doesn't wanna play nice, and then I use Nautilus)

Amanda:

Two things I can think of:

1) If you are using Mandrake 10.1, when was the last time you ran the Mandrake Update? Initially when Mandrake 10.1 was released, there were some USB errors/Konqueror opening errors and a 300 MB patch was released to fix this. Go to your Mandrake Control Center --> Software --> Updates and download any new updates there are.

2) plug in your USB drive before you turn on your computer, and then boot into Mandrake and see if you can access it from there.

I strongly believe that it is problem #1 if you are using Mandrake 10.1 like you think you are. We can find this out by opening up a terminal, and then typing:

Code:
ls /mnt/removable2
Do you get anything or any errors? If you get no errors, then it is definitely problem #1. It is being detected correctly, but konqueror is the culprit in not displaying anything. So go get those Mandrake updates ASAP!

Daddy is helping me. ::grin:: (he's pretty new to linux, too, but definately more experienced than I am)

I'm using Mandrake 10.0, actually, and we're still searching for answers.

Thanks to everyone! Replies are always helpful

Hmmmm... as to your #1, perhaps that's my problem with Konqueror...
