You have to check your monitor's documentation for supported refresh rates (horiz. and vert.).
Does it support 1600x1200 resolution?
What's the monitor's brand and model?

-Login as root:

Type
$ su (then enter your root password)

Make a back-up copy of the file:
# cd /etc/X11
# cp xorg.conf xorg.conf.bkup

Then open midnight commander:
# mc

-select the xorg.conf file and hit F4 (to edit the file)

-scroll to Section "Monitor"
- go to the line VertRefresh and replace the values 50-70 with 50-75

-scroll to Section "Screen"
- go to the line DefaultColorDepth and replace 16 with 24

-scroll to Subsection "Display" and replace every Virtual 1600 1200 with Virtual 1280 1024
(it's your monitor's max resolution)

-hit F2 to save the changes, and exit midnight commander

Now, type:
# exit
and login as a normal user
Type:
$ startx
It should get you into KDE. Good luck.

Then keyboard , then modem then printer and then
Well I reckon try hitting the mouse with a hammer , threaten to shoot it or wring the bloody things chord.

I reckon you might be better off in Windows. No offence but if your understanding is at the demonstrated level you are going to be forever just getting a working system

rafael ,I hope you will not be offended but you need to read the manual on the Mandriva web site or out of a book or magazine . "Linux Magazine" is out now and it has "Mandriva One" on DVD there and the magazine tells you how to install it properly. Do this first then ask your questions.

Linux is accepted as an operating system you must learn , like Windows if you remember , you had to learn that fairly quickly to use it and even your mobile phone had a steep learning curve
